  1. Audition time again. I need to ask a favor of everyone. I will be trying for a few concerto competitions next year. What are your favourite Violin Concerti? all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Szymanowski, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturian, Schoenberg... ah yes Bach.

Bottom line: make sure you absolutely master one of the mainstays of the repertoire (such as Tchaikovsky's) PLUS a more modern work such as Ligeti's. That will surely help your chances in an audition ;) .

  2. back and ready to create some more music for the upcoming school year >:P

  3. is considering writing a new piece revolving around the effects of liquor on the human body and then orchestrating it. I will call it "the drunken suite for strings"

I meant that, despite it being a funny musical idea, I wouldn't want you to get your life ruined by alcohol ;) ...

oh gosh no. I never get drunk. Bleh, That's why i'm writing it. I think it's an interesting idea music without control. But not having my body under control is a different situation. i let other substances take care of that ;) lol

good on you! that's why I like the idea ;).

  4. I'm so glad to be out of theory!!! YES!!!!! =c

  5. When people give me 5 pieces to do in 5 days for a wedding, and don't plan on paying me more than 20$. I don't think it's worth it, but some people I've talked to have told me it's for experience and I'm lucky they want to pay me at all. Should I Even consider this?

Right? I was very angry... =c I'm not that green of a composer...

Give them music worth 20 bucks ;)

  6. I don't understand how a composition project that I've been looking forward to since I realized I suck at music theory, has become the hardest project of the year. I've make 100 drafts and 3 made the cut. I finished one, the 1st day it was assigned. Gave up on the analysis and started a new one. again, couldn't analyze and broke WAY too many rules. Now I decided to hand write one, given that it would all have to be based on my piano skills (which sucks) so it would be simple.....

Danke für den Rat Ananth :) and I think I appreciate it more, I just need to analyze it now. ughhh

  7. okay guys. I've been dealing with a serious issfor the past couple of weeks i've had an issue with writters block. It's been musically draining me and its been making my life rather stressful for the past few weeks. Can someone give me some ideas on how to concour this?

Yes. But my teacher told me that it's a job, and i have to be disciplined, and force myself to work because inspiration comes to people who are meant to be composers... unfortunately, that was our last lesson of the semester. and i still haven't a clue what he meant or how to achieve instant inspiration

Just keep writing whatever comes to you even if your ideas are awful. Eventually something you write will have be worthwhile but you may have to write some awful music first. You have to realise that not everything you write can be great but the more you write, the better you'll get at it and the less you'll find yourself in this situation!

Tuohey's totally right. We've all written our fair share of crap before writing something worthy.

  8. okay! i think i understand common phrasing and why it makes a piece sound less random. XP i feel super slow

    1. moore 4 l3ss

      moore 4 l3ss

Thats because you are... :O Just kidding! :). It's all good music is for sure hard to understand sometimes but we will race and see how slow you really are haha

  9. My first piece on a concert was chaotic. The conductor took it 20-30 beats faster then marked, and even still the kids playing it rushed! XP maybe it's just me, because alot of people said it was fine, I'm just glad it's over XS

  14. I need to start having manuscript paper around. A little part of me dies every time I come up with something brilliant and I'm no where near staff paper.

I also keep stealing staff paper from my peers and teachers, and I think they about about fed up with my negligence. =) opps

I have been ripping off sheets from my office notebooks! That's when I realized I really needed to carry staff paper everywhere...

    4. calebhines

      calebhines

For a "quick staff" on non-music paper, I sometimes will only draw three lines (top, middle, and bottom) and fill in the missing two lines as "internal ledger lines", only as need. (If it happens to already be lined, like notebook or graph paper, I can use two of those lines for the top & bottom, and just draw a single middle line.)
