  1. I went to a music camp that had "classes" in the actual universities for young people(ages 13-18) . So you can imagine my knowledge of music history in certain periods of music isn't as advance as yours. I just know basic outlines and the well known composers. So anyways I remember the "teacher" said there's an argument when the romantic period started. They say 1810 or 1819 or when beethoven's ninth symphony came out(1822-1824). However I like this argument because it is safe to say this was the early influence or the beginning of the period that would eventually spread across the western world in music. Since it's known that things were slower back then , therefore it took longer for everyone to know of these "new" things, ideas, or beliefs. I also remember learning how politics played a role in music back then. I found 19th and 20th century music changing those roles as well. Since a lot of the music back then were commissioned by the royal courts of europe, whomever was the favorite composer would get the most recognition. Then in the 19th century you had the downfalls of a lot of monarchies. Therefor I can definitely see even small remnants of favoritism in music by leaders playing a role in music back then more then you see today. I don't really recall anyone caring who obama likes but everyone sure hell cares about what magazines , mtv, tv in general , web sites , advertisements ( remember being bombarded with kreyshawn "gucci gucci" ads on youtube) or any media for that matter recommends now.
  2. I always had a hard time with harmonies but a great time with melodies.I usually work on the melodies first. I would definitely work on chord progression first.Keep coming up with different chord progressions (i do this on my large keyboard and use a smaller keyboard for the computer) until you find something that pleases your ear.If it sounds bad or okay keep going till you find something that sounds good . Other than that orchestration books can help with giving color and/or more personality to the melody. Also give yourself an idea of what emotion you want your melody to convey. After you can look up music scales or notes / chords that show certain emotions or character. All this can help with and the melody itself. The Book I recommend for orchestration that helped me with color : Orchestration by walter piston (you can find it a music library)
  3. just learn the basics of instrument of choice.I think it should matter how well the melody, harmony, or whatever rather if you can play a song.I dont know the piano but I can write on but the only reason I have more controll for it is because my background in violin and music class.Even then I suck at the violin but I can write music on it and perform it eventhough it sucks. It is the musician who should be able to play it the best not you even though you have to know or look like you know what you are playing in my opinion.
  4. well if you want to make your own.Hit the bass drum every fourth beat.Right right after the fourth beat hit the snare and hi-hat.It is an idea but you can use it and create or adjust it to make it your own
