  1. Ran is an incredible film. I just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to see Toru Takemitsu's name in the opening credits. Other pieces by him that I would recommend are Twill by Twilight A Flock Descends Into The Pentagonal Garden, For Orchestra
  2. When I was starting my undergraduate degree, sadly I had a strong dislike for all things opera. However, I loved Shostakovich (and still do). Lady MacBeth was the opera that got me listening to and liking opera in general. It's so full of raw brutality, brooding, beauty, sarcasm, you name it ... I love it, especially if I'm in a bad mood.;) I have a recording of the original version of the opera. I've heard a suite of the interludes from Katerina Ismailova, the revised version he did in the '60s, but I haven't heard it in its entirety. Some of the interludes are quite different.
  3. :thumbsup:Way cool... even with the cheesy Sound Blaster(?) sounds.:P Can I assume that you're a fan of Zappa? (and maybe a little Dream Theater)?:) I'd love to take at look a the score but the link wasn't working for me.
  4. Any body here watch the show Futurama? (It was a animated show created by Matt Groening, the same guy that created the Simpsons.) Anyway, there's a one-eyed character on the show who's name is Leela. On one particular episode we find out that her full name is actualy Turanga Leela. I nearly fell out of my seat laughing at the reference. check out Turanga Leela - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  5. True. Although, my wife and I were listening to the 11th symphony recently and we both commented that the trumpet calls in the first movement sounded rather "Mahler-ian". Of course that just may be the nature of trumpet calls...:) I did not know that. Maybe that's why I like Debussy so much. ;)
  6. I really liked it, but that's probably 'cause I'm a sucker for "crunchy" chords and good syncopation. My favorite part was the use of the split thirds at the end of the 2nd mvt. Nice.
  7. I was just listening to the 5th the last week for the first time in a while and I remember chuckling to myself that that theme in the 4th mvt. sounded rather Williams-like.
