The Nine to Five, a program piece for Clarinet and Bassoon in two movements
Final for my composition class: Program notes: The Nine to Five is a program piece written for Clarinet in Bb and Bassoon. The composition is focused around an aural representation of working a tedious and mundane day job at an assembly line-esque factory. Repetitive driving rhythms flirting with minimalism open the piece to exemplify the unheard music shadowing the daily routine of an average employee in said profession. (intensely) The piece then unfolds in to the tension of driving home at rush hour, (driving) to finally getting home. (emotionally) The day unfolds and the mood calms as the first movement comes to an end. (romantically) The second movement opens with an alarm clock, followed by the individual hitting the snooze button, (annoyingly) only to repeat the same daily routine. The second movement, however, is focused on payday. The lethargic drive to work becomes more congested and stressful as the individual nears the factory. Clarinet/Bassoon program piece
This is a movement for my composition class. I am looking for a little help. I am trying (bar 36 and on) a fanfare-esque sound to convey the excitement of payday after working an assembly line type mundane job. I have to keep it as non-diatonic as possible, but still portray my message. I'm a little stuck and looking for ideas. This is the final part of my piece, and it's due tomorrow (wednesday, 12/17/08) Any suggestions would be helpful. Everything after bar 38 is just ideas scattered, though I want to utilize the clarinet melody in bar 36 or 37 or whatever it is. Hello. This is my first post. My name is Ben. I'm 21 and I go to school for composition and theory. Here are three pieces I have written for assignments in the past few months. Sorry for the strange names file names. 1) Sonata Exposition for my theory III class (piano) 2) Piece for my theory IV class, employing 20th century compositional techniques. (it falls apart at the end, I know) (piano) 3) second movement of a piece for comp I, parameters are piece for single lined instrument, no key signature, no time signature, no (overt) spelling of triads, no major or minor tonality, though a tonal center can be implied. (cello) 4) first movement of second piece for comp I, due in a week. Same rules apply as first piece, though more lenient. It's program music. It is the music to personify (is there an equivalent musical term?) working a mundane 9-5 assembly line-esque job, the daily routine, through it coming to an end. (clarinet and bassoon) Any comments, criticisms, (not specific to the adherence of following the guidelines of the assignment) thoughts, etc. would be nice.
