  1. Have any of you read Theory of Melody by Narveson?
  2. What books, in your experience, are the best to read to learn the theory of writing melodies. I don't mean basic introductory books about scale tone tendencies and motives (which seems to be all that I can find), but more in depth books about writing melodies. Also, what do you find is the best way to learn to write melodies?
  3. Is Percy Goetschius's book Exercises in melody-writing: a systematic course of melodic composition useful or dated? I read somewhere that although his books were written a long time and contain dated ideas much of what he wrote is still used and applied today. Is this book worth my time, then? It seems to be the best there is on Google books but there is very little information on this book on the internet.
  4. Thank you, that was REALLY helpful!
  5. Can anyone tell me any examples of or anything about modulation into the minor subdominant? Is this common? Uncommon? Does it sound nice?
  6. Right, and I've been toying with that but I can't seem to find anything on proper voicing and transitions.
  7. Hi! I'm interested in sonata form but I am having difficulty (learning how to) modulate into the dominant. Any advice?
