Piano is a big help especially with testing chords and stuff. And if it's a MIDI electric piano, some composition software can record your playing and transcribe it for you.

I'm no pro composer but maybe trying to remake other songs might help. It's what I do sometimes. Kinda like following along math problem examples then doing them yourself.

I'm on the same boat, I think. Can't grow out of those M's, m's, M7's and m7's Are there any good sites or books that teach about more advanced chords and chord progressions?
