December 24, 200520 yr Um, hello, this is Escaflonase. You can call me Esca if you like. This is my first time posting here. This song is entitled "Leviathan", after the mythical beast. I use so Finale as a midi synthesizer; I used it to get certain sound. So, if you view the midi file in finale, it will not be an arranged piece of music but a jumble, rather. It will also look worse because of the file being taken back into Finale. Well, this is probably the best piece I have ever done, in terms of sound. I was just trying to see what I should, maybe rearrange or what I could change for the better. Please don't refrain from being critical, I'm trying to get better. The piece originally started as my own score to War of the Worlds(2005) but very soon in I decided that I wanted the piece to be my own. . . My influences are Stravinsky mostly, though noone will probably notice but me. . .(chuckle). Enjoy. Leviathan.MID
December 29, 200520 yr hello there, Esca! :) i listend to your piece, and i must say it's really inpressive and in terms of sound itself you really did a great jot bringing the might of the Leviathan to life! :D With the brass sections powerful and the strings creepy as hell the sound you made gets really amazing. but its noticable that you dont have a great deal of knowlage in music theory and instruments. some parts were way out of range especialy the chimes (or tubular bells)... i know it sounds good when they are played very high, but their range can go up to a second F above middle C im afraid... :( . also timpani can only go to a D below the bass clef and you even used an F# below that. But dont worry! maybe using the bass drum those notes can be played. aslo- in the brass section you had an E3 at the very ending... a trumpet COULD play that bu only a REAL virtuoso! i think you should learn more music theory if you plan on getting your pieces performed, but if you are planning for them to be only recordings then the music you worte works pretty fine! even that the harmony seemed like a compleate mess when i first looked at this the sound was pretty amazing! and yeah, i saw stravinsky influence in those bitonal chords. but as for the melodies and counterpoint, i'd say more like.... mussorgsky? maybe a little borodin from time to time i think, am i guessing anything ;) ? ok well anyway it was a really interesting piece to listen to and i think with help of some music theory you can make it much better! just keep up the good work! hope to hear more from you on the forums , wolf :)
December 30, 200520 yr Author Oh, THANK YOU!!! I've been waiting so long for someone to say something! I really appreaciate your comments. I was a actually suprised you gave me the time of day. Everytime I ask someone to listen to it, they dont want to be bother because I don't have any real training in theory. But you gave me a fair judgement, I thank you. I also want to say that I did find out my timpani parts were a bit out of order(actually, a lot out of order). But I didn't even know about the bells. I think it would be best to get that orchestration book, like my teacher told me(chuckle). I think you mentioned a few terms at the bottom; counterpoint, virtuoso, and a few others, I'm going to research those because I really would like to make this a playable piece. I've been waiting for someone to review me for so long. Of course when you ask your family, they always say it's good(they have to!). Thanks, I will try to get on more.
December 31, 200520 yr Hey, no problem! if you wait some more im sure someone else will say something about your piece. if not... try reviewig other peoples pieces and they might return the favor. Oh, and the ranges of individual instruments can be easely found on the internet.
