Impromptu No.1

Featured Replies

Hey.

If you have spare time (which I'm sure have otherwise you wouldn't be here :P), have a look over this. Mind you it's only few hours work. I think I'm going to add another bit as development and recap to form an ABA structure. Well here's section A anyway. Nothing like Chopin or Schumann so don't worry :)

What a good example for an A section. Any advice I could give is let the left hand have more fun.

Yah its just that, fine. Beehtoven, he's a man who knows how to use the left hand.

I'm 16 - been at composition for over a year though this is my first crack at piano pieces. Am more suited to writing orchestrally.

Chad: Cheers, thanks for that. Yeah, the LH can get boring, have to spruce that up a bit.

Nico: Not mature ...? I'm not sure what way to take that! It's just a work on the opening motif and development of that. Don't forget it's an impromptu not a sonata so that's why you're not seeing countless semiquavers and trills and so on.

Will hopefully get working on the other sections now. Thanks for the comments.

Ooh this is unique. I'm not very familiar with the major impromptus out there... I know I have the Schubert ones on iTunes, but I do like the piece.

A few comments:

-very playful melody (well it's not a melody per se, but theme). Would be very fun to play on piano, and entertaining to watch someone play as well

-The movement back and forth between F and f# is cleverly done, and an interesting "observation" (by that I mean it's cool that you should realize the sound possible and use it), but there may some way to avoid the blatant parallels. Perhaps a different chord in the f# key before moving back to F. The mm15-16 kinda gets to me. It's a matter of taste though, and just a minor quib at that.

-Another minor thing, I think that the chromatic scales are written wrong, based on the fact that the underlying chord is an F. Tell finale to make that measure enharmonically equivalent to F.

-The first beat of m28 sounds off.

-The new ideas at 26 and 30 are very good! Same goes for 36.

-I like the last ending quite a bit.

Very clever overall. The 5-tuplets to 7-tuplets was well done, and the F/f# shift was a good idea. A nice piece

Nico: Trust me to get the wrong end of the stick  I should be apologising!

Eken: yeah, the chromatic scales are a personal favourite - I kinda write them the way I want them to be written. That's just me being stubborn :) Those rippled chords always sound out but it kinda fits in as well. Still have to finish the thing though - another section and recap.

Off to work again...

That's wonderful. Well done.

May I suggest you hold the rolls in measure 30 and 33? Such beautiful chords and they're stopped before they could be heard.

I can't beleive you're my age. :)

Hi Thomas,

Great Piece, lovely atmosphere too. My only complaint is that the left-hand does get a bit monotonous except for the brief chordal interludes.

Yeah, I was a bit weary of the left hand when uploading it. My fears were correct!! And those rolled chords - adding a pause mark over them ... now! :P

I think the left hand gave a great atmosphere to the song. The sound of the right hand occupies the ear enough for both hands.
