Short and Suite - Brass Quintet

This piece was written in January 2007 and was performed at my Junior Composition Recital in April. The movements are short each with its own simple, sweet melodies, hence the title.

I find it quite nice... I don't like the instruments, but that's just taste. I'll try to igore them.

I. Sometimes you have really nice harmonies! but sometimes the harmony is a bit weird. (I'm talking about the sweet parts, so I don't mean the rythmic dissonants) It's only sometimes so you don't have to worry too much.

At 10 seconds there is something very parallel that disturbs me.

The second is funny :musicwhistle: I like this one more than the first! I think it's also more fun to play. Good!

Hmm, I don't like the third... Especially the beginning. The beginning sounds like an anoying game boy game. Sorry to say that. (It could be the midi for a large part of couse) I'm not a fan of the rest of the third one either. The atmosphere is like a much too warm summerday...

But the first two were good! (especially the second!!!)

First one: didn't like the beginning very much, but after the "darker part", where one could have named it a "grave", I did like it, it was more "hymn like", as you call it. The beginning and middle part where rather a "grave".

There were a few strange harmonies and dissonances but they didn't sound out of place, or at least not very much.

Second one: I like the introduction, but the rest ... I don't know. I can't imagine anyone dancing a waltz to it. It's quite a dark atmosphere again.

Third one: Isn't that a little fast for brass? Just wondering, must be hard to play. As opposed to the first one, I don't like hearing the dissonances here. The ending sounded very "Columbia pictures" like. If you know what I mean. Very holywoodish.

I agree with what you guys say for the most part...The first two movements are quite dark, even though "Hymns" and "Waltzes" aren't usually as dark as these pieces. I'm interested in these "strange" harmonies I seem to have created, since you both brought them up. As far as the finale, I've been contemplating re-doing it entirely, and changing it to a darker finale to match more with the first two movements. The beginning is difficult for brassists. My own quintet played this piece with me on euphonium (instead of trombone for this piece), and was doable with the experience of the musicians in my quintet -- it was far from cake, though, and with the brass instruments, created quite a nice "wash-over" of sound type effect, but I feel that effect is almost random in terms of context of the piece. All in all, that will probably change in the near future.
