Film score-style piece inspired by Smoke on the Water

Featured Replies

So I based this orchestral piece on the classic riff from Deep Purple's legendary 'Smoke on the Water'. Written on my sister's laptop while I was on holiday/vacation in southern Italy, this piece is largely inspired by the images of forest fires that were all around us at the time (don't worry, none were that close!)

At 0:26 a character is introduced, he is supposed to be quite a foolish character, but at the same time threatening. He represents one of the alleged arsonists that are supposed to be starting a lot of these fires in southern Italy.

The calmer part at 1:01 represents some relief from the fires as a gentle and soothing rain descends on the countryside, quenching the fires.

The fires then return at 1:59 and the piece is brought to a dramatic (I hope) finale of victory over the fires.

Let me know what you all think. This is my first post by the way, so hello everyone!

Welcome to YC!

Your orchestra sounds nice for me. I liked the calm part ;)

Very nice work! You really know how to use the orchestra effectively, that much is obvious. I hear a lot of strings and not as much woodwinds, a problem I myself struggle with, but it's not a problem if it's what you intend.

One thing I will raise as a concern - the ending does not seem to fit, or perhaps the direction it takes near the end doesn't seem natural. I was expecting to hear a restatement of the beginning themes with some developments in the orchestration, but instead it went in a completely different direction. If you've heard the OGC version of Metroid, you may know what I'm getting at. You're starting in a very militaristic minor, and you're ending on a triumphant major! If you want to go major, bring back the original themes and modally change them, and it seems like the rest of the piece wants the ending to be more abrupt, not a major-chord lush crescendo with oompahs in the timpani!

Welcome to YC. A beautiful arrangement of a classic work. I think I agree with Jonathan about the ending though.

A hint as to how to get more comments on your works is to comment on others as well. They will usually return the favor.

Well done.

Very cool idea! But what I am noticing more than the familiar melody is your control over the orchestra and the lush sound scapes you paint. Very intense and dynamic orchestrations; perfect for the movies! Wonderful job! Would like to hear more soon.

Michael

Very cool.

I like the familiar theme with the orchaestrated sounds very cool!

Hm, looks like a one-time poster! That's a shame.

Hey guys, cheers for the comments! Very much appriciated, I definately agree with you, Johann, you've raised a good point regarding my choice of chords. I'll work on it!

Don't worry, I'm not a one-time poster, I've just been extreeeemely busy recently. Excellent stuff guys. I'll try to get on here more, looks like a nice little community you've got.

Great piece! I enjoyed it a lot, particularly the orchestration (as others have already commented). Sorry, haven't got anything else to say, but please keep posting - I'm interested in hearing more of your stuff! :)

this is indeed good stuff! Your use of different instruments and most of all sounds makes this a joy to listen to. Im looking forward to hear you do your "own" melody in the future.
