Serenity (Updated)

Featured Replies

This is for the opening credits/introduction to a game called Serenity. I am trying to incorporate adventure and thrill in this piece. The adventure is the domiant emotion. This is pretty much the main theme because even though it will only play once, I will continue to use the melody in major plot scenerios.

The game itself can be descibed as a 2-D Elder's Scroll that has a more sinister vibe. It is real-time, but it is not first person. It is based around a quest system which means that the main story line is very thin and the game is more like several short stories put together. :P

Any comments or advice are welcomed. Thank you for listening.

First you should add more reverb to your woodwinds and percussion for a better mix. The strings are fine as is. ;)

It wasn't really as adventurous as it was sinister; more soft brass might help, if you want that changed.

The "disharmonies"  starting at :55, I don't like at all. They sound too randomly chosen to work for me. Kind of a little cheesy (I hate that word), actually.

I don't know... for an opening it was kind of disappointing. Then again this IS 2D you're writing for, so something bombastic wouldn't really work. :ermm:

They dissorance at :55 didn't turn out quite right because I doubled all the instruments playing it which I should have only done with the trombones. But actually it's just the main theme:

But varied and doubled with a rest inbetween each decend.

Idk nothing special will be happening when this is being played. The staff credits will be jumping up while pictures are being shown, but that is about it. If I did anything symphonic it wouldn't fit well. I was going to go with a piano arrangement instead, but I decided on this because it also gives a sense of adventure as well. the pictures are besically setting the stage for what you will be playing. I agree that it's more sinister then adventurous, but I was kind of mistaken to say the adventure feel was more domiant.

Thanks for commenting and I'll take your advice on the reverb on the wodwind and percussion.

Yes, that would be inappropriate, I agree. That is why, if I could choose, I'd pick to write for 3-D. Unfortunately, in the indie game industry, that usually doesn't happen because it costs a lot to make things look presentable by todays standards. Guess our only hope is to be hired by a big name. :(

You said you'd fix it though, right? you didn't really say that exactly.

Yeah, I'll fix it... I posted it here first to get clarification on any mistakes I might have missed and also to see whether people like it or not :)

While I can hear the adventerous mood in this piece, I also agree with the above comment about it sounding sinister. I don't hear anything wrong with this piece. It caught my interest immidiately and held it throughout. It seems a bit short for a credits introduction but maybe the credits sequence isn't very long.

Upon relisten, maybe the percussions should have some more reverb. Anyway, good piece.

Appearently we're at a point where we are commenting on practically all of each other's pieces..............awesome!
