Great piece!!!

I have listened to this one a number of times at your site and am glad to see you have posted it.

I am curious about the name.

Vespertine was an album put out by ? from scandinavia or somewhere like that, b ut I doubt if that is what this refers to.

It also relates to Vespers. When I was younger we use to have Vespers every Sunday night. A time for prayer and reflection.

Vespers is also related to Venus. Or really anything having to do with the evening. There are vespertine Flowers that bloom at night or in the evening.

Anyway.... Which are you refering to with the title, or is there something else?

Regardless, this is a great piece and I am glad you are sharing it.

Here are the program notes:

"Vespertine's backdrop sets the stage for nature's ongoing and often hidden nightly performances. Each act eventually lifts, sustains, and drops to drape each chapter closed. These orchestral swells and crescendos help to create dramatic impact and assist in the work's transitions and focus. Once calm,Vespertine can concentrate on smaller and simplistic events. While caught by it's own active imagination and nature's mysterious design,Vespertine is a quick romantic sketch of a true intrinsic masterpiece."

"The script for Vespertine includes a role for the unique contra bassoon that clenched the part from the absent double bass. The unusual sliding effect of the trombone's glissando made it's presence known with awkward utterances. Tremolos, tongue flutters, trills, and a palette of percussion interact and help to support main themes and drive the performance forward. The occasionally conspicuous "one" beat gives tribute to the 5/4 time signature and gradual drops in tempo. Overall,Vespertine is a short story in length but vertically flexible to adequately perform on opening night."

Ensemble: flutes, english horns, clarinets in b(flat), bassoons, contra bassoon, horns in f, trombones, trumpets in c, snare drums, bass drum, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel, violins, violas, & cellos.

um OK, don't panic.! Try windows Media player or any other mp3 player. If all else fails go to my web site and click on the Radio link. You have to install a quick little Java program (automatically) then it will "stream" the music. Then just click Vespertine to listen. If all that fails I can upload another file format for you. Let me know and thank you for trying! :)

The music was quite intense and dramatic. I didn't study the score, but, at first glance, it seemed beautiful.

I would have to say that the percussion was the hardest to write - not to sound typical as possible - and also the hardest to score since there is not a complete standard for percussion notation.

Okay...well, I don't really know what to say, I've listened to it three times and each time I think to myself, wow. I also really enjoyed the intensity of the piece, but I don't really have the skill to say anything more.

A very enjoyable piece. I found the orchestration very clean, fresh and dramatic. The contrabassoon part is great. Well, I would have liked another couple of minutes in length - easy enough to just replay on a computer but perhaps short for a live performance. Great work and thanks for sharing.

The beginning reminds me very much of a Danny Elfman score, and then I feel somewhat in a circus carnival during the early 1900s. I'm not a professional, but I believe you put the woodwind pieces and brass pieces together very well! It sounds very nice!
