"Americana" school

Featured Replies

Or anyone else of that "early" 20th century Neo-Classical school (Mennin, Giannini, I guess Persichetti can be thrown in there too).

I've always been pretty influenced by American composers for the most part, Bernstein, Barber, the others I've listed and many others (obviously ones who *aren't* dead). Anyone else feel more of a pull too these guys and that sound. I also feel I can personally connect to it more than a lot of the European composers of this time, aside from Hindemith, Honegger and choice Schoenberg and Berg works.

Come on, nobody?

I'm definitely influenced by American composers... Bernstein and Copland are among them. Throw in some Stravinsky, Williams, and a hint of Debussy and you've got a good portion of my influences.

I forever have a fight against the influences of Mennin and Persichetti. I get on well with those 40s - 70s symphonists so add in Diamond and Creston. Less interested in Copland.

What do you mean?

I haven't had much influence from those few "Americana" composers. However, Eastern European composers such as Saariaho, Gubaidulina and Early Arvo Part have been extremely influential as well as a few Asian composers like Takemitsu and Satoh.

:-)

I like Ives. Does he count? I need to check out more of his stuff though.

Oh cool, I will have a listen to it. All I have is a cd of Symphony No.2 and a whole lot of shorter pieces like Central Park in the Dark and the Unanswered Question.

I haven't really heard enough Bernstein to make up my mind on his music, but I like the guy, I like how into jazz he is for a "classical" composer.
