Invention in A dorian

Experiments with a brutal and craggy polyphonic style. (I'm not original in that sense, I know) Two voices leaping playfully about. :cool:

I might do a set of more substantial pieces in this style if it excites me enough.

Oh, that's nice! Energetic and wild, with a discrete style. I like the compactness of the elements: A consistent harmony, pregnant motives and polyphonic voices.

I would love to see these ideas in a bigger form, with longer duration and more voices. I could imagine this piece very well in an extended version for two pianos too.

Do you like folk music? It's sounds very folky and not just because of the dorian mode.

Very interesting piece! The ideas certainly need some further development, I think, but the music is good and original. I agree with Robert, it is really folky, these lovely mordents remind me bagpipe music...and there is also something from Rameau's harpsichord pieces.

I couldn't help but imagine a really clumsly person breaking things.

Rameau? Perhaps.. This was inspired by the polyphonic music of Klaus Egge, which was inspired by Norwegian folk music, which is related to baroque music! Egge wrote only 2 self-standing piano pieces in a similar, more dissonant style so I decided the style warranted further exploration - am presently working on a cycle of 10 pieces in this style!

I liked it - you made the minor key sound quite joyous and positive. Very interesting rhythmic variation too...

I didn't care for all the grace notes, blips and flips and such...it's a cool effect, but in this piece is slightly overused, eventually losing the impact.

Otherwise, a nice piece :thumbsup:

However much they ''lose'' their impact, they feel completely right to me, and thus they will stay. :angry:

well, a very nice piece (okay I am eschew anything dissonant, and am very particular about it), I heard dissonances in mm 6 and 31, which were quite out of place.

Also, this piece is abit jerky, and although i can sense a coherent harmonic progression, i can find a lead voice, and its, a little sketchy.

Well-defined, lively writing. Love the contrasting middle mini-section. The short length sustains the single tonic, though it might be interesting to change the keynote in the middle section.

But you sneak in an A sharp in ms. 21 which diverts us from the tonic, so the head is turned nicely there! I like the C sharp in ms. 31 too!

I can see this as one movement of a "Petite Suite", comprising 5 or 6 movements of contrasting mood. Maybe a "Modal Suite" with each movement using a different mode?
