Isolation - A Marimba Feature

Featured Replies

This piece was originally intended to be used as part of a larger scale work I was composing, but the larger work fell apart. Picking up the pieces, I was particularly fond of some of the ideas in this piece, originally titled "Isolation Overture", now simply "Isolation".

Although I originally intended for it to be a mellower piece with less instrumentation, it evolved and, especially with the drums, became more moving with a fuller sound.

Instrumentation: Marimba (featured part), Bass, Strings (possible cello and two violas), 2 trumpets, hand drums, and alt percussion (shaker and cymbal).

Enjoy and please comment on anything and everything.

Do you have a pdf?

It's a little repetitive. The continuous ostinato feels like at least it should change once the bass comes in, and the marimba should maybe do something else. I like the idea and the groove of the piece, it just feels like it could develop quite a bit more, rather than just looping sections and adding in stuff.

When it goes to the triplets, that's a cool idea, I wish it weren't so sudden though. Like maybe have some triplet stuff previously so it isn't that abrupt.

Again, the ideas and the groove is nice, I think transitions and development are where the issues are. I'm listening to the MP3 and the reverb is crazy, haha. It was enjoyable to listen to though, and it definitely had some good ideas.

i agree, but all in all, i think it's great...

I do agree that it is a little repetitive, but overall I quite enjoyed this. I was very pleased to see music for marimba, (being a marimbaist myself) and this piece is really good!
