EW Overture

Featured Replies

This piece was probably written between last april-august, anyways, comments and suggestions are always welcome.

John Doe once wrote a piece too, but he forgot to post the link to the piece. So the next day, he went ahead and posted the MIDI file and everyone in town was happy! Yeh for happiness! and Yeh for posting a MIDI with the thread!

oops, sorry

The music is good, but I'm a bit confused about the intro drum passage... it didn't seem to flow with the following section. Furthermore, the piece seems very cluttered... certainly ~0:50. Just seems like the instrumentation is too dense and the passage don't always flow.

With that said, you had some great ideas in this music. The descending theme you give to the winds a times is quite clever, and I like how it recurs throughout the piece. You also use the instruments quite well, although as I've said, I think that you clutter the piece too much by using too many at once.

Okay then, cheers on a job well done. This piece certainly shows promise of the composer you've become.

the thing about the timpani beats is really stupid, well, when I was writing this piece I was reading Mario Livio's book "Golden Ratio", I was utterly unconvinced that anyone can use math in music, so, to mock him, I used the golde fibonacci sequence for my timpani, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,21.....

Hahahaha! Way to stick it to the "man".

EW, as in "Eww..."? Just wondering.

I agree, math is VERY possible in math. It is also very possible in music, as you have shown us. I like the thematic material, but not especially the drums at the beginning, although, I thought your use of them at the end was well done. It just didn't seem to work with the following lines. I also think that you could do a better job transitioning into the slower sections. They seem to just appear out of nowhere.

Great job, a fun and interesting piece.

EW is the abbreviation of the name of my Highschool

and I will tell you all the small details in this piece, the melody in the lower strings, is also derived from the Fibonacci sequence, 2,3,5,7. What I did is rather simple, I assigned each note a number, since this is in C major, C natural is one, and B natural is 12. 2,3,5,7 is Csharp, Dnatural, Enatural, Gnatural, and C natural. This 4 note combination happend at 0:27, then at 0:43.

My opinion about using mathematics in Music:

DONT USE MATH IN MUSIC ANY REAL ROMANTIC WILL NOT USE MATH IN MUSIC

THe reason I write music is to escape the over rational world we have today, believe me I do plenty of advanced Physcis and Calculus in my highschool, so I have a good idea of what math and science is all about, but, I just don't think that music is a mechanical thing, I do music because it expresses the feelings/emotions i can not express through other ways. Let's keep math out of music, cause I feel it is oxymoronic to say, that math can make music, music has always been a very human creation, the addition of Mathematics is undermining the human aspect of Music making.

I make music because I am human, I guess, I doubt that machines can do it, even though that machines can do mathematics pretty well.

Kinda reminds me of something by Dvorak.

I really enjoyed the piece, it had a happy-go-lucky type of feel. The drums at the beginning did not work for me at all. In fact none of your drum beats really complemented the piece. They were very random. I understand its a midi, suppossed to be a timp. playing a snare part, though I believe you should begin the piece with a nice chromatic sweep of violin, viola, etc. Some parts were very unconnected and just were left hanging, then picked up way too abruptly? I feel that at m. 86 an m. 99 that the style just changed completely, I got the sense of a polka beat, May be you should consider changing those parts along with octaving down. The end was out of character and building to nothing and the last chord did not leave an impression. The piece was good overall and I liked it, though it just needs some work and tweeking here and there. Overall, I think the piece has so much potential......endless possibilities, just a little too random and stylistically-wierd? Well Good luck on your composing and continue with this piece it could be a work of art.
