String Quartet

So this song is my final project from my music theory class(hence the name, I need a new one). It's about 2 minutes long, and has two themes. It's pretty intense, and may get developed more in the future.

Ok, it got developed more. The extended version is just short of 4 minutes, and works with the second theme a bit more. I am also working on another section. So this song is still being worked on.

Note: Even though it was a theory project we did not have to follow the common practice rules. (this comment was edited after the comments by Exodizer)

could you post a midi or mp3 please? I don't have Finale

Music Theory class? I can see you trying to avoid parallel fifths by changing the rhythmn and adding a suspension but my teacher wouldn't fall for that. Seriously just follow the basic voice leading principals if thats what you're trying to do.

Suspension? Are you talking about in the round at the beginning? Or a different part? Plus this song does not necessarily follow the rules. I mean it is in a mode (Aeolian), which is not exactly common practice period. I wasn't even watching for parallel fifths, so if I did psuedo avoid them, I'm proud of myself.

I'll get it converted soon.

You did pseudo avoid them more than once (and sometimes spat in their face by not even pseudo avoiding them with parallel octaves but I only saw that once) and I have no problem with music that does not follow the rules. And it's not in Aeolian mode. You use the sharpened seventh in harmony which makes it harmonic minor. It does seem to have stylistic orgins and it does sound kind of muddy when you don't perfectly follow the rules.

It's in aeolian at the beginning. I have min v's and maj III and maj VII all over the place. I'm pretty sure that makes it aeolian, with the occasional raised 7th. That ends when we get to the second theme, when we move into a harmonic minor. And even then I have maj III instead of aug III+. But I will watch for the parallel's when I rewrite it, and fix them if I care. Sometimes I might actual be looking for that sound, so we'll see.

Does Debussy sound really muddy to you? He doesn't follow the rules perfectly.

Thanks for the comments

Parallel fifths smarallel smiths.... If it sounds good. It sounds good. I never follow the Major order of chord progressions when i write choral music or any music. Pshh... Music theory classes before college are great though.

Harmonic minor doesn't apply to the III chord (you can use the III+ chord but it's an altered chord). You have to pay attention to the rules before you can break them. He broke them on purpose because he liked the sound and I just so happened to agree with him. He still paid attention to voice leading and when he broke it, he did it on purpose. That's why it's not muddy (maybe muddy isn't the write word...)

Ok, there are several things wrong with what you are saying. And I find them to be quite offensive.
