February 17, 200620 yr so.. as I mentioned before, I am "just" starting the whole composing thing. I don't study composition until september when I "hopefully" enter the conservatory here. So I wanted to start asap. I've come up with some great phrases worked out through improvisation. but I was wondering if anyone could help me through with the process of what to do and when and all. Thanks ahead.
February 18, 200620 yr Well, to help you out, ideally we should hear what you've done already and critique it. You say you have some ideas, so get them down into notation, maybe develop them a little, etc.
February 18, 200620 yr Author ok. I don't have much. but I can probably get some notation samples on here of some experimental things I've been trying to dub out. I'm clueless as to how to get midi files and such going of me playing without paying 100 or so dollars and the fact that the piano is across the house. Lemme go see if I can get some notation going.
February 18, 200620 yr When I started composing, I always started with a melody. More often than not, that's still the first thing to come to me. Try coming up with tunes and melodies. Work on a single line at a time until you're comfortable, then add one other part (or voice or left-hand in piano) and work on making that sound good. Start simply, and don't be too impatient with yourself. Rome wasn't built in a day. Learning anything really worth learning that requires skill takes time. Don't expect to be writing symphonies next year, or even the year after that. One of my biggest concerns with many of the young composers here is that they try to write big, grandiose things before they're ready. Do post some of what you've done already if you can.
February 18, 200620 yr Author ok. I've tried the melody line thing. but I think what get's to me is, I openly admit, is that I try too hard to make a 'moonlight sonata' type quality piece. Then I think that, that, blows me off course. the left hand is one of the hardest parts for me. I get caught on doing runs with it. I think I may be doing too many runs, like the 1232123 runs. I'm trying to go simple but I'm at the same time trying not to sound cheesy. btw, is there any place where you can create piano sheet music on the internet for free? I've only found places for creating blank staff sheets, where you can put as many bars as you want and all that. I'm just wondering if there is one of those but you can add notes.
February 19, 200620 yr Author so... I just wrote the melody for the right hand of the whole first movement. I really like what I have and feel the potential in it. What I'm planning on doing next is, I'll add the bass notes to it. then I'll liven up the whole piece and make it breath. if I'm heading the wrong way, turn me around.
February 19, 200620 yr Sounds like a good start. For free notation software, you can go here and download Finale Notepad. It's free, and really easy to learn: http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/ Eventually, to get more bells and whistles, you're going to want to buy the full version of Finale, but Notepad is a good place to start.
February 19, 200620 yr Author thanks! all I need really is a place to put the notes down. though as I look at it. the way this piece goes could work out with a few more instruments. Strings have come to mind several times.
