Advice about getting a mac

Featured Replies

Alrighty, so my computer has failed me for the last time and I am now on a epic quest to find a new computer. Specifically a macontosh laptop. Windows has failed me several times. But that's beside the point. I am iterested in this Mac.

Apple Store (U.S.) - MacBook

That's the link to the page I found it on. I would like to know if this computer would have enough gusto to run Finale and GPO at the same time. You see, I am not very computer savvy... Any good advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What is your price range?

$1200 at the very most.

Yes, this computer should do you just fine for now. You can purchase the Macbook then upgrade the RAM at a later point if you don't have the budget yet. I've used both PC and Macs extensively for audio (and music production) and can tell you that Macs are AWESOME for this kind of work! I've worked on three different Macs (one was a G5 and two were Intel-Macs) and on three different PCs (Intel 4 HT and Dual Core Pent. CPUs)- the Macs are superior in many ways for audio production. One key though is a good amount of RAM.

Update: If you purchase the cheapest Macbook then upgrade to 4 GB of ram you'll be spending about $200 more than your budget. Apple overcharges a great deal for RAM so I would look around for other website that sell certified Apple RAM. You could save a bundle!

Thanks,

Nathan

I use a black macbook and it works perfectly. However, definitely get yourself an external monitor with at least 17 inch. Using Finale on a 13 inch screen is not fun.

Also, don't get the black one. Get the $1300 white one, + the 250 GB hard drive. It's a bit cheaper that way, same specs and everything last I heard, and doesn't scream 'steal me!' as much as the black Macbook does. Or just get the cheaper white one :P Maybe keep your old desktop monitor as a second screen as well.

Yeah, there's no real reason to get a black one. I still did it, I'm weird like that :P Mostly because I'm a snob and having a white notebook would make me feel like a dentist. And who in their right mind would ever want to be a dentist?!

I couldn't have a white piano either. It would just feel wrong :(
