Feature Action Film Score

Featured Replies

I was recently involved in scoring music for an action feature and was responsible for most (all? not sure yet... I'll have to wait until I get my viewing) the fight sequences (and few other non-action scenes as well) since the correspondance likes my action music. Most of them are fit to action scenes so don't expect anything enjoyable. I guess the purpose was to achieve a "badass" feel... it's about martial arts and street fighting. This is also my first scoring to film experience.

I think you mentioned that last time you commented my track a year or two before... :D

What do you mean by morphs?

  • Author
Oh, my bad, I think I got confused with the pads/reverb.

I assumed you used low and high morphs, such as the ones in EWQLSO Colossus. (That wasn't a plug, I swear.)

I create my own synth patches from analog/fm/modular synths. Sampled synth is probably the most ridiculous concept ever :whistling:. And no one calls them morphs, they're either drones, pads, atmosphere or ambience. ;)

To be honest, to me, your work sounds like every other EWQL-whoring wannabe film composer out there.

Now. That's not exactly a bad thing. The motivic ideas are there, your grasp of music is phenomenal, but the mix that EWQL produces is just so monotonous and boring. I wish more film composers would learn to EQ to create some reality and space. Maybe that's just my producer/composer ear being way too picky. But...

Every one of the 2nd tier composers (below the A listers) has the sound that you have. The constructive criticism I would give you is to delve more into the mixing aspects of it, create a sound all your own, continue to work with your self-recorded stuff, and gradually start to distance yourself from your peers. Only then will people take notice :)

That's quite an amazing critique, considering I don't use any EWQL libraries. And my sound mix is nothing like EWQL.

I'm not going to play "Mr. Nice" guy here, because I spent a long time recording, producing, mixing, and mastering my own sounds. This isn't something that people usually listen to. And I'm glad that you're one of the few that do... Also, I enjoy negative criticisms but if they're not constructive or thoughtful then I'm not going to act modest with my response because I don't take this one lightly. You're review is obviously not well thought out (you've probably didn't listen to everything), otherwise, you're just not that great of a producer. If you're going to comment on producing sounds, you should try to learn some yourself first. Unless there's just something wrong with your ear, but I'm thinking the faulty part is your ego.

With all due respect, I don't intend on being any composer, I have better things to do. This is purely just for fun.

Also, he's clearly not using EWQL. I use EWQL and I know what EWQL sounds like.
