Fantasy Etude

Yep, it's me again... :whistling:

This is actually the first thing I've written since whenever the last time I posted here. I've been busy with school, but tonight I decided on a whim to write a little piano ditty. It's about 4am now, and I guess I started this around 12:30. It wasn't planned out at all, so the form is very loose and the ending is obviously unfinished. But nonetheless it's rather different from anything else I've written. Last time I was here, someone told me to just write a non-flashy, non-bombastic piece for solo piano, so here it is...

Well, contrary to the previous post, I liked this quite a bit. The only section I didn't particularly care for was the introduction. It sounded too much like an exercise and reminded me too much of Chopin's wanky etudes. However, past that, I thought it was an interesting piece. Some quirky yet enjoyable harmonies and it's always nice when I can visit this section and not have to listen to some regurgitated romantic-era slop (though, I'll admit that I do enjoy some of that slop as well). That brings to mind another interesting point... I can't really catergorize this as any style of music. I don't think it was all that original but at the same time, I have trouble classifying it. There were nods to late Romanticism and Impressionism but all in all, I guess it's just a modern tonal work. Anyway, well done.

I agree with nirvana69. The piece gets more interesting as it progresses. The modulations are natural and convincing. The part I liked best was between measures 48 and 51. In the beginning it sounds like arpeggios for the sake of arpeggios and establishing the key of C. When pieces of melody poke through the arpeggios it feels much better. These pieces can come from the bass or from emphasized notes in the arpeggios. Other than that, I would suggest you shorten the introduction, lengthen the development, and redo the ending.
