What kind of music would this be?

Featured Replies

This is a simple piano piece 8 bars long that modulates to the, oh , the subdominant, I thought I had modulated to the dominant but obviously not...

I don't know what kind of period this would come from - it's probably hard to tell as it's so simple. I'm only keeping it simple, because otherwise I'll try something big and completely mess it up! start small get bigger I guess.

Could I make this piece longer/bigger by just doubling the amount of time I spend in each section, e.g. spend twice as many bars on the G, and twice as many bars in C major, just double the length phrases? I think if I go too long it would get boring.

thanks again,

Hi 123Will,

Actually this piece is getting closer and closer to something that works pretty decent. I was going to write about your Gavotte number 2, but this one is a bit better. The biggest thing I still think you MUST do is start working in binary form. 2 halves that each repeat. The first half leads usually to the dominant, then the second half goes back to the tonic.

Two suggestions for this piece: in meas. 4 have the bass go from the G up to a B for the next half note. And in meas. 7 have the bassline maybe move more. Perhaps try A (quarter) B,G (in eighths) then two D quarters, the first an octave higher than you wrote and then the other going to the octave below.

As I said, this piece is kinda happening, but go LOOK at some smaller baroque pieces (Your piece is still pretty officially baroque) and figure out how the whole short binary form thing works! Here's a teeney tiny one of mine for you to see. Its the shortest piece I've ever written :P

(note that it comes in a book I published as the second piece on the page, hence it being placed at the bottom!)

Thanks!

I've put all the changes in but the form was a bit messed up, and I modulated to the subdominant instead of the dominant!

I now understand the baroque 4/4 binary gavotte type form :D. You're short example helped :D

I didn't realise my 'song' would be baroque, because I just made a melody :whistling: and added a baseline. Then again, I made it with the harpsichord sound on my keyboard... :P I've added some more to it, but it's gone a bit astray with form, so I think I'll just make it a random song.

Tomorrows I'll hopefully compose a simple binary baroque piece - and will upload.

I think I'm going to but 'Baroque keyboard pieces, vol 1' (or vol.2) by ABRSM, that should be good for analysis.

You're my personnel teacher of baroque, xD

many thanks,
