Something fun and (probably) too difficult.

Hello, everyone!

Here's part of a piece that I'm working on. "Noise" is just the working title, so don't think too much of it.

This is the second movement of three. I haven't finished the other two, but I will put them up once they're "finished."

I'm aware that I'll need to make some changes (sextuplets at that tempo, anyone?) and that the score's a little rough, but, please, these are the things I'd like pointed out to me, so feel free to do so!

Any general feedback/criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael.

PS. Daniel, thanks for the MIDI!

It looks playable with a bit of practice, at least for the violin.

Thank you, ParanoidFreak and Bolanos!

It's good to know that it seems playable. I wrote the piece with professional musicians in mind (not any in particular, just musicians at that standard) so I could maybe enter it into some competitions and just so I would be able to write exactly what I wanted with the confidence it could be played. That said, after I wrote it, I thought I did make a few passages a little too difficult.

I might run the marimba part past a percussionist I know to get his opinion of it, and if there's anything I should change.

As for the trills, I'll indicate what I want when I revise the score (not until I've finished the other movements), I think I've written a few in my draft, but I couldn't figure out too quickly how to put it in Sibelius, so I'll keep that in mind!

Thanks again for the feedback!

I actually quite enjoyed listening to this piece.

You didn't overlook any detail, from articulation, to dynamics.

I can tell that you had some fun, and your right, its probably not practical for someone to play this piece, but hey, it is fun to listen to.

Hello, MathWizard!

I'm glad you enjoyed listening to the piece. When you say "not practical," do you mean "not possible?" or that it'd just be really hard to be bothered learning?

Thanks again for listening!

Michael.

Here's your midi.

The piece was quite fun, and mostly looked playable. Don't be afraid to give the violin lots of ledgers (or putting the 'cello into treble, but tenor works here.)

I didn't like the sextuplets in the violin...it felt like the kind of figure you find in a rock guitar solo... not among my favourite things! But then I'm biased.

Nice ensemble to write for, and decent use of most of it. I would just take lots and lots of care in writing the string parts, making sure everything is comfortable to play.

Thanks for the MIDI, Daniel.

I'm guessing the sextuplets you're referring to are the ones that begin around measure 40? I'm not quite sold on that section. I might revise it a little if I'm still not entirely happy with it by the time I get to finishing the other movements!

Making the string parts more comfortable is probably a good idea. If I recall, I think I still need to put in bowings here and there. I tried to avoid catering to the players too much in this piece, though. I often get scared of writing things that are impossible, and it's often not good to have reservations like that when writing. So, for this, I wrote what I wanted first, then considered if it would be possible.

That said, I've definitely written a few passages that may need revising should this ever be performed.

Anyway, thanks very much for the feedback!
