At the beginning of a piece I'm working on I want the pianist just to play the arpeggios I'm writing without a restraint in time signature. Then go into 3/4 time.

At the beginning of a piece I'm working on I want the pianist just to play the arpeggios I'm writing without a restraint in time signature. Then go into 3/4 time.

In that case, just hide the time signature [measure tool], and use stemless notes [staff style].

Also hide the bar lines with the Measure Tool. There is another way of indicating free time, and that's to use the 0 time signature. You could just hide the time signature and replace it with the 0 from Maestro font and it should look pretty convincing. Or maybe Finale lets you enter 0/0 in a time signature... not sure, I've never tried it.

You could also just write it normally and indicate a very heavy rubato.

Okay Thank you for your help...and I tried it...you can't have a 0/0 time signature just so you know....

Thanks again

Jacob

cannot divide by zero... lol. Sorry, I just had to.

But, seriously, don't try 0/0, it won't work... (I have tried)

But in any case, Morivou is making a mistake by identifying the symbols we use for time signatures to those of division: 3/4 in music does not mean "three units of time divided by four within a measure", it means "three equal durations -crochets in this case- (defined in the tempo) within a measure". And multiplication by 0 is absolutely possible.

Or is it that composers can divide by 0 but can't multiply by it?! :O
