Winters Morning Op.108(String Orchestra)

Featured Replies

I wrote this piece out of a small chorale I once wrote.

tell me if you can hear beethoven in this piece.

no, no Beethoven in it.

However, I find that the harmony tends to be a bit confused, and the melodic material seems at times to be at odds with the accompaniment.

There's a nice interplay at one point between 1st and 2nd violins, where they hand off the thematic material to each other. That's always good when writing for strings.

The bass part (ie: cellos and basses) is a bit on the heavy side.

But the piece is good right?, because On acf.finalemusic.com , they gave me a lot of negative comments about this piece

"good", "bad"... it's relative.

you're a student, learning about composition.

most of the points made on the other forum were valid.

adding opus numbers to pieces you are writing as a student is rather pointless. opus numbers are a means to catalogue works. I doubt you will ever be coming back to this piece in future years, so cataloguing it seems rather pointless.

I don't think you'll be able to convince an orchestra to perform this.

It DOES show where some of your weaknesses lie, however, and that is something from which you can learn.

You need to learn to make your harmony function on a linear level... it has to mean something, from one chord to the next. And this, regardless of what sort of harmonic language you use.

You need to make your melodic material consistant with the harmony that is beneath it. Harmony isn't incidental, added "after the fact". It needs to support the melody, and the melody is intimately linked to it. you need to learn more about those links.

i love the copyright
