Writers Block - Cello Quartet

Featured Replies

I've been asked to prepare a cello quartet for an upcoming concert, and finally got a start on it, made some decent progress... But now I'm stumped. Any suggestions on what to do with it?

As always, other criticism on it is more than welcome. Or, if it's just a terrible start, please let me know rather than embarrassing myself when it comes concert time.

Thanks so much!

Anyone? Help?

I think you would write good pieces in my style. Don't you want to try to write something to my competition? (Cello competition. Try a new style)

Anyway... I would change the ending. It's just a big boring. I think it would be better to use every instruments at the end of the piece.

Hmm, writing for cello quartet is very hard. I would suggest getting some good arrangements say of some Bach for cello quartet and study them. It is important, with a cello quartet, that there is still a sense of parts (i.e. soprano, alto, tenor, bass though not necessarily all of them at once). The problem with this piece is mainly how cramped it sounds. Depending on the skill level of the group who is to play it, you should spread out the parts considerably.

I also can't seem to identify what the idea behind the piece is. Is it supposed to evoke some sort of mood or incorporate themes? What are they?

very much for the thoughts. I think I will look at some Bach quartets, now that you mention it. I really didn't have any main themes or thoughts when writing this; I just heard it and let it go onto paper. :P

Hmmm. I'm a huge fan of the first twelve or so bars. Just absolutely gorgeous. You've inspired me to get off my butt and write for strings.

After that though, I think you started to branch out a little bit too much without enough development. You seem to move randomly, rather from have one idea develop into another. I'd suggest going back and perhaps trying to insert some development in order to spread out the different sections (I believe someone above me mentioned this).

Cheers,

~Christian
