string quartet no 2

Featured Replies

First movment

(beethoven)

this is a string quartet which contain half tonal and half atonal sound into this music

i am very eager to create the effect like youtube symphony from Tan dun , he used a theme from beethoven syphony no 3 and paste into this msuic , and i am surprise and i decided to learn from him

i know , it would uniwse that to paste the same theme from beethoven which used by tan dun , so i used another one ,

i will try to used beethoven syphony no 5 -- the most famous theme from him and i try to used it paste into the second theme and that section will also atonal harmony in style

it will be sonata form , so it would be transitional music

the second theme section will be quite repected , and this is the skill from Glass

I feel a few of the sections were filled with notes just to fill space, like in m139 in the 1st violin.

Also, watch your speed in the contrabass; i'm not sure how fast those runs could be played.

I really like the theme at 257 :)

The only other thing is to watch playability in triple stops (i don't know anything about it, so someone else might be able to help you if you don't play strings yourself.)

Overall, it's not too bad. I would have preferred some more rhythmic and textural changes over it, but it's alright for what it is.

hi

thx for your advice

very nice,

It starts of quite beethovenesque, the first minute or so probably my favourite part. Then goes into more dissonant sections with some interesting effects.

Some of the rhythm gets a bit monotonous as the piece goes on - the combination of classical and minimalist/modern sections isnt quite constistant

Are you writing any more movements?

A great effort

This might be the midi but it sounds a little choppy... then it seems to stop in places for no reason... that's probably just my problem... I like the first theme a lot. I'll read the score when I get the score when I'm not trying to fix up the internet on my dad's computer... overall I really do like the atonality mixed in. At times it feels a bit aimless. I'll tell you where when I look at the score. which might be tommorow at this rate...

P.S. : I think its wonderfull that you're trying to improve :)

double P.S. : I don't know anything, so don't take anything I say too seriously

Hello :)

For a string quartet, I thought that your introduction was very effective in introducing all of the instruments. I am wondering, though, where you got your training. Some of the harmonies are quite interesting and the constant movement keeps the piece interesting despite the rhythmic continuity.

I failed, though, to see any resemblance to any theme by Beethoven. In the middle of the section, though, I kind of did see a resemblance to a section of his 7th Symphony. There also weren't any sections that were "atonal"; just dissonant. Which is something that I thought this piece could use more of. Your tonal sections especially require more counterpoint and dissonance, in my opinion. With that, this piece could truly shine.

In addition, when you have the repeated tremolos in the cello/viola (I'm assuming this is a string quartet?), you can use a technique of a tremoloed melody. This allows some interest in the accompaniment line while still having that rhythmic effect.

Besides these minor things, I though that it was very intense and I enjoyed the simplicity in contrast with the harsher passages.

Good work! :D

Hi there!I think that it is a quite good piece of music.....

Although...

It has a little phrase as its own theme (sounds like Beethoven indeed),yes but it bears a GREAT resemblance to Mendelssohn's String Quartet in F minor op.80-1st movement.Esspecially your part 0.29-1.20 (an early example) is exactly a theme of Mendelssohn's work (if not identical, quite the same notes, the same idea of movement and the same use of the instruments)...

Of course i may be wrong...but again...

Anyway, personally i liked it very much.It is a really good effort....and inspired from a great master...if not Beethoven,at least Mendelssohn!

Keep the good work!

Atonal composers wrote a lot of music that isn't dissonant

Tonal composers wrote music that could be pretty dissonant (See....that one Corelli trio sonata, or better yet, the Eroica symphony)...

I viewed a few of your works for strings on here and first, i want to say - musically I like the language (nice blend, i think of atonal and tonal characteristics.) That said, you would do well to read about different techniques and characterisitics of string instruments. While most of what you wrote can be played - there are certain roles applied to each of the quartet. Sopranos - Violin I; Alto - Violin II; Tenor - Viola; Bass - Celli/Contrabass. Generally, in most string literature the lower three (vn II, vla, and vc) do a lot of crossing easily.

I found a good resource for this here:

Principles of Orchestration On-line - northernsounds.com

and another good resource here:

Masterclasses - Young Composers Music Forum

I hope that helps - the music is nice though!

This is a little better. Again though, does the 2nd Violin really need to cross way above the 1st? Part crossing in the strings is normal, but your use of the 2nd Vn in a 1st Vn role is quite excessive. Also, you may want to check your slurs. Slurs, for string players, are used to indicate what notes should be played in a bow stroke. At m. 74, as one example, are you wanting them to use 1 bow stroke for the entire measure? Or are you wanting 3 bow strokes? Same goes for measure 83, 92, 174 - 175 (also, work on making sure the slurs do not overlap into the system above or below). I love the broken chords in the viola and cello! I always enjoyed playing figures like that.

i really thx your advice , it will be a big helpfull for me

i wish i could offer you a good resource for string technique. hmm.. a good resource, perhaps would be to view the beethoven quartets at International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) Portal

keep in mind its beethoven, his are a lil more challenging (particularly the latter quartets.) Bartok is another good reference as well.

much better. again, though.. your slurring is problematic at m 72. i'd suggest removing the larger slur and leaving the four group slurs... or if you want all of that to be played on 1 bow remove the 4 group slurs. Other than that this is much better :)
