Eat and Shut Up - A Blues shuffle in F

Featured Replies

Hey again

This is yet another blues tune I made for school, this time in a more true style. (see: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/savanna-1980ies-electronic-funk-blues-17920.html

It's a simple 12-bar blues, 1 chours with the rhythm section, 2 choruses with a Horn-theme followed by 1 chorus Improv solos (I improvised the solos by writing in notes and not correcting if they sounded stupid, just to make the solos sound natural :P). The order is Trumpet, Alto saxophone and Trombone.

I don't have a score, but I don't think it's that necessary. Comment on the flow, the rhythms, the harmonies (I know it's hard without a score but try), the solos ;) and any other thing you might notice.

Edit:

New version with a bass solo added

Eat and shut up.mid

The only negative I can see is that it's a really basic chord progression for a blues, which makes some of the harmonic material kind of weak.

Other than that, it's pretty good. :)

Issa fun little tune.

Suggestion, perhaps on the second time around, change the little horn-fill in measure 4 of the form. Or do SOMETHING differently, just to alleviate the copy-pasteyness of the overall structure. ;)

The last measure of the form however, that send off is brilliant! Very cool lick...

[trombone solos are supposed to be low and slow, silly]

We didn't choose the chord progression, it was specified in the assignment.

Yeah, I'm working on it. :P

Sorry :P

Edit:

By the way, what do you think about the other solos?

They're all fine....pretty straight up, BALOOZE blowing, but they get the point across.

A new version has been uploaded - bass solo added.

Swingin'! I love the melody. I thought it was C-jam blues for a sec. Ellington in bebop.

It may be blues but it has a lot of personality and joy.. great stuff!

Thanks for the compliments guys ^^

Very good work Franz. The style I like but don't listen too often as it is heard so often.

My only suggestion - your solos could be more rhythmically free - not within the measure - you have great rhythmic variety there - I am talking about crossing the bar lines more irregularly - say for a 4/4 have phrase lengths of 2 1/4 + 1 1/4 + 2 1/2 forming a large phrase then cut or extend the phrases to fit the time given for each solo.

Overall very good work!
