Piano Concerto in C minor, mvt. 1

Featured Replies

I really like this piece. Good orchestration and use of different timbres. Also, your basslines don't disappoint. I also enjoy your rhythmic variation. The way you use the piano reminds me of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. Very nice! Don't get me wrong, you do have your unique style I'm just saying that's what it reminds me of. Your melodies are also very enjoyable. Plus it looks like a fun piece to play. As far as m. 159, no it is not hard. However, you will get a very dark sound in that register of the trumpet. I'd say because you go no lower than the A you're good to go.

The only thing I would suggest is at the beg. of m.211-241. Now, I don't know how to play the piano but that looks crazy hard. As in, it looks like something only a player piano could do. But if I'm wrong let me know. Again I don't play the piano so I wouldn't know for sure.

Can't wait to hear the over movements!

This is a great piece. A good opening i think. The main motif reminds me of Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3. As kukes said the orchestration is really interesting, with some really nice timbres. The use of the piano is fantastic

Great work!

I'll post a more in-depth analysis on this piece, in the mean time I want you to focus on a couple things which are just big ideas that I want elaborate on with you and to praise upon.

-Good use of thematic material; clear themes and opening

-Transitions? As in, between themes; I would put a little more threads between them to feel a better move from colour

-Nice orchestrating; perfect compliments with the piano, no doubt

-[However] The piano part has a lot of problems; not very pianistic; too repetitive (where it's "duh-difficulty" as I like to call it; empty and repetitive virtuosity)

-Closing

These are the big points that I'll get more in detail possibly tomorrow or this weekend. I have much respect for you writing a concerto; I, myself, am beginning to under go writing a full-scale concerto starting this year (eventually..)

All I can say is very very nice piece! Sorry I can't comment more in-depth than that seeing as your composition skills are far above my own.

I really enjoy this piece in general. Orchestration looks good, I like the main melody. I love the short dissonant section. I think my only problem, though, would be the longer dissonant section, where there is sort of a tremolo in the piano, and then some more dissonant stuff following. I think that disrupts the flow of the piece and doesn't work well with the very traditional melodic and harmonic content you have at the beginning and throughout most of the piece. Again, that shorter part were have the whole notes in the piano is very well thought out and provides great contrast, the faster part really gets me thinking "wait what kind of piece is this? a more modernistic or a slightly more traditional one?" So that's something I might consider.

Overall, it's a very nice piece.

I thought it was a really creative piece, I really enjoyed the themes you used. I personally thought some of the piano writing could be improved, it felt mechanical and seemed quite repetitive. Also I thought that the piano tremolo part dragged on for a tad too long.

However I really enjoyed the piece, it had some great moments and the interaction between the piano and orchestra was fantastic.

You guys helped so much, thanks! Movement 2 is now posted!

Very entertaining piece. The way in which the the piano enters I liked alot.

Many delightful orchestral touches particularly in the woodwinds (at least it sounded so to me on my bad equipment). I was disappointed by the lack of clear recapitulation at the end of the movement but as you seem to be making the whole piece a cyclical structure, maybe that's a treat for later in the concerto.

I actually liked the "piano bashing" parts but I'm not sure how they would stand up to repeated listenings.

I look forward to hearing the rest.
