The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls

Featured Replies

It's been a while, but I finally found time to post the recording from the premiere performance. It's at my local community college's spring chorus concert from last year. The performance is by the chamber choir which consists of about 20 singers, (14 of which were men!).

You can find the original thread for this piece here.

And the mp3 can be found here.

And the score (viewable, not printable) is attached below.

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

It's enjoyable. The choir singing seemed very quiet on the recording, which is forgivable. Dynamic contrast could definitely be thrown in, after all, the very title brings to mind oceans and swells. And, being a bass, throw in the selfish suggestion that the bass part could easily be more active, especially when mentioning heavy objects such as water. Idiocy and nitpicking aside, it is a lovely piece, and you would do well to continue with your music.

Thanks for the kind words.

I thought the same thing about the dynamic contrast, but the choir only had about a week with the piece before the premiere, so I didn't complain.

I think you could possibly have thrown in a little more harmonic variety - the piece seems to revolve around the same few chords in each verse, but otherwise it's quite well crafted in terms of voice- leading and part-writing. It's interesting, actually, as I've been trying to set this poem for a while but could quite seem to manage it. Will give it another go now and post my version as soon as I can.

I like it...I definite grasp the feel you were looking for...I can see what the other posters were saying, as far as dynamic contrast and the weight of the bass part. I felt the tenor line was well written personally. Your voice leading is very smooth. That's something i've been trying to work on a lot lately. And lucky you that you have a choir to work with.

It took me awhile to get the m4a file to work. I had to download a convertor to get it into mp3 format to get it to work on my system.

It is always nice when you are able to get your works performed so congratulations on that.

Nice work
