EWQLSO [Kontakt] Sibelius Sound Sets Now Available

I was following the mac instructions until it asked me to find com.native-instruments.EWQLSO Gold Ed PRO XP in the preferences folder, which definitely isnt there. There are only 3 beginning with com.native-instruments:

kontakt3, userpatches, servicecenter, and content

I re-read the instructions several times, did I miss something?

Try looking for them in the Users/username/Library/Preferences folder. The NI installer occasionally writes to the user settings rather than the system settings. If they are there, copy - don't 'cut' - them to the Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences directory. If they are not, send me an email and we'll explore a few other possible causes.

That did the trick, thanks!

I'll test it out later today and see how it works.

Hello Jonathan

I have kind of a weird problem with your soundset: running Vista 32bit Sibelius 5.25 and Kontakt 3.0.1. Opening the EWQLSO Gold Edition library in Kontakt 3 standalone is no problem. However when using your soundset in Sibelius it returns a message "the content you are trying to load is not registered (please be sure to start the application that came with the content at least once)". This only seems to be a problem with autoloading the patches since loading them manually is possible without getting an error message. I would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance

Try running the EWQLSO Gold Kompakt player in stand-alone, load a sound, then close it. Go back to Sibelius and see if the "Content Not Registered" issue persists.

If it does, email me and I'll provide the likely fix. This is a result of inconsistent placement by the NI installer and requires multiple edits to the Registry. I don't post these publicly because someone will make or attempt to make the changes just because they're there without actually needing to make them, and that just causes problems.

So I got through the whole setup until it asked me to click on the "Speaker Button" in the mixer window, which I cant find for the life of me.

All the mixer window has is a list of all of the instuments, some show/hide toggle switched at the top, and a solo and mute button for each track.

Also, in the playback device window, I had two Kontakt 3 devices available, and under type, one specified (AU) and the other (VST). What should I have done here?

Edit: I expanded the individual menu for each instrument and found a speaker button for each, if that's what the instructions were referring to, but when I click them, I just get a message saying that the instrument was not found. Anything in particular that would be wrong in this case?

This is really a matter of preference. AU (Audio units) is the 'standard' for Mac systems, but either one will work.

Verify the path entered in the ContentDir string of the EWQLSO plist file. The path should include everything prior to the "Instruments" folder in the library path. It's also worth noting that if you have changed the folder structure in any way, either by renaming a folder, moving a .nki file, etc this will break the autoload functionality.

Hello Jonathan,

I cannot use Kontakt on my laptop because of low RAM , 1 Giga, I have no problem

at all with Kompakt, because I can use DFD option.I can use 4 instances of Kompakt

and load about 30 instruments with no problems !!

Loading a small orchestra in Kontakt 2 take a lot of time at the start of

Sibelius, and there are a lot of of note that are not played, and the

system is very slow, and sometime crashes.

My question : is it possible to use DFd option in Kontakt 2, like Kompakt,

and optimize and reduce the comsumption of Ram ?

Thanks

Kontakt 2/3 both use DFD by default. They do however require more overhead than the Kompakt players. You can try adjusting the DFD settings in the Options menu to better suit your system - I've never personally had a need to change these from the default settings.

Regardless though, 1GB RAM is a severe limitation when that has to also be shared by the system, the Sibelius process and any other running programs as well. What's left for Kontakt to use is likely ~512MB which just simply isn't enough.

Hello Jonathan,

I stopped some services of Xp , XP now uses about 150 Mbyte of Ram... and I'm using the Sound set Gold lite now and the result is excelent, I can charge a full orchestra and the Task manager Windows shows about 700-800 Mbyte of RAM used

Now my small system is working fine !!

Hello Jonathan,

please can You post a list of sample used for every sign of the score ?

which sample of EWQL library corresponde to legato, staccato, pizzicato ?

I would like to know how we can modify the table of the sound for each articulations, because of I don't like some articulations in the XP PRO Lite Gold Sound Set . Especially in a violin line , there is abrupts and not beatiful changes of articulation! :: for example from legato to staccato, there is a change abrupt between a note played legato and other played staccato, a big difference of timbre and volume too, so the musical effect of the line is not very good...!!!

Can we modify your sound set, which program use for to do this ?? Or can you adjust the sound set ??

Thanks.

Unfortunately a list like this is just not practical. It would wind up being longer than the listing of instruments in the EWQLSO user manual because there are various duplicate entries and other things in order to account for articulations that are missing in certain instruments.

This is a result of the library programming rather than the sound set. For the most part, articulation changes all correspond to the patch names that they are calling. However, the actual programming of the samples is such that a mf Violin Sustain might equate to a ff Violin staccato, due to differences in velocity layers and other things.
Can we modify your sound set, which program use for to do this ?? Or can you adjust the sound set ??

Thanks.

These are not 'fixable' by the sound set itself. Though to say, the sound sets can be modified however you like, but I do not provide support for sound sets that have been altered because there are too many variables that it introduces.

You should familiarize yourself with the "Live Playback" controls in Sibelius as these will perform direct edits to how the MIDI data is being triggered and sent to Kontakt. The most important one you'll find is the "Live Velocity" parameter which adjust the note-on attack. Dynamic discrepancies like those you mention are most often the result of Sibelius sending velocities that are too high or too low.

The result is that even though CC11 (which controls dynamics) is properly set, the note attack is overtaking it making the note much louder than what the dynamic indicates it should be. The solution is to lower the "LiveVelocity" in order to balance that out.

Let me quote my response to a similar inquiry from another forum, hopefully to bring some perspective to this:

...it's not as straight forward as push play and have incredible results, because that's just not a realistic goal to have. There has to be some amount of editing to make the music breathe, and when it comes to MIDI data what works for one library won't necessarily work for another.

If you figure, take a 120 piece orchestra, let's say an average age of 40, and most of these musicians studying since (we'll go high) age 10. That's 3,600 years (40 - 10 = 30 x 120) of combined musical study, experience, and knowledge that goes in to performing each 15-20 minute score.

So, it's really not just about composing, but becomes a matter of 'orchestrating a performance', making adjustments, sticking a wrong note in the horns to add realism (we're good at that :P;)) - and bringing your musicianship to the samples in order to have a musical result in the end.

The computer does not see your musical score in the same way you do - musicians pick up on so many different indications in a score, certain note sequences are intuitively played in a certain manner, etc - but to the computer the actual printed score is just a graphical representation of the MIDI data below it. Not unlike Windows - it's zillions of lines of code, presented in a graphic format - but it's the underlying data that's responsible for what happens. So if something isn't sitting quite right in your speakers, you need to make an adjustment to the score that you may not have needed to indicate for a real player.

Think of it as standing on the podium saying "Violins! less accent at bar 241" - followed by the scribble of pencils on the music stands to note the instructions - that's what you're doing in your score. You can take comfort in knowing though, that while the violins are likely to need a reminder in the next session, and the one after that, and after that - the computer only needs to be told once :)

Any updates in regards to this working with Kontakt 3 without having to fuss with a roll back?

Any updates in regards to this working with Kontakt 3 without having to fuss with a roll back?

Native Instruments stated both publicly and privately to me several weeks ago that the K3 programming issue in Sibelius is fixed in what will be the 3rd beta release of Kontakt 3.5.

However, I've yet to see this build of the software and information I'm privy to from several library developers I'm in touch with has led me to believe what was planned as a 3rd beta release might well end up being the official release of Kontakt 3.5.

That, of course, is completely speculative - but in either case the next Kontakt 3 build that becomes available reportedly resolves this issue.

At present, no. I have worked with ProjectSAM in the past though so it's not to say one will never be done, but it's not something that has been discussed to date.

______

Update on the Kontakt 3 crashes

The current beta release of Kontakt 3 version 3.5.0.013 resolves the problem of Kontakt 3 crashing Sibelius. Kontakt 3 users should feel free to update to this version.

Hi:

First of all, I would like to thank you for the effort and the good work that is being doing. I am a recent member, but I am doing my best to learn quickly.

I write here because I have a problem trying to use the sound set of EWQLSO Gold Pro XP for Sibelius. I use Mac OS Leopard, y I have downloaded the proper sound set to my computer. I have readed y followed instructions but when I start a new score, I go to "Play -- Playback devices", I delete the "DSLMusicdevice" and add the "Kontakt3 (AU)". The question is that I cannot see the EWQLSO Sound set in the right, it only appears "Sibelius essentials".

I hope someone can help me. Thank you very much in advance and sorry about my english. It is not my native language.

Greetings.

If you click the sound set selection (where it says "Sibelius Essentials") does EWQLSO appear in the list?

If not, it's due to one of the following

1. You're not running Sibelius 5.2.5+

2. You entered an incorrect library ID in your plist file.

If it's not number 1, email me with screenshots of the plist edits you made and I'll see what I can find.

Hi again:

In the meantime I had an answer, I was doing again all the steps one by one and carefully and I realized that I was installing sound set of EWQLSO Gold, when I have installed only EWQLSO Pro XP with the library of EWQLSO in its folder. It was because of that confusion than the sound set didn't appear. When I downloaded the correct sound set and installed again it appeared without problems.

I have tested only a bit, but I have to say that it is a great job. I am very grateful for the work and the help. If I can do anything to help, just ask me to do so.

Thanks again. Greetings.

Pedro.

Hello I Spanish and I ask if is nesscesary register ewqlso libraries on internet for install the

sound sets ?I have registered ewqlso gold but only whith the serial number.

Thank you

Hello Jonathan,

I have a question about how to chose different sound for a track when

the sound of Sound set is not satisfactory.

If I go in the mixer of Sibelius and chose not the Auto Sound set, but un instrument of the list of EWQL ( from strings, wind, etc... ) this sound is set for all the lenght of the score : so I cannot made any change to the articulation during the bars of the score.

Is there a way to change instrument during the score, maybe with midi message ?

Where can I find a chart of midi message for program change for EWQL PRO ?

How can I do this ?

A second question : my version of Sibelius is 5.2 not 5.2.5 . Is it OK or I need to update it ?

Thanks .

Things should work OK in 5.2, however it is completely untested in that version so I do not provide technical support for it. 5.2.x or higher is supported.

To your first question, there are only a few cases where you should change an instrument through the mixer, and they all center on percussion - even those have better methods.

Which specific sounds are you trying to replace?

The chart at the back of the user manual lists all of the added playback terms which can be combined to call 90% of the patches in the library without needing to reassign anything through the mixer.

With more details on what you're trying to do I can better give a solution.
