Drumline Cadence

Our drum major is writing a new cadence for the line, and she's convinced herself that it's crap I suppose, I don't really think so.

It's quite short right now, and doesn't live up to its full potential yet. I just introduced her to Sibelius and she's still learning some of the basics.

Anyway, comment, bash, or whatever... she can take it. ;)

Hey! Personally i share both your opinions in this case. I agree with you that the piece is nice but it seems way to busy for the purpose. Maybe if it were to be incorperated into a long drum piece and used in a drum feature during a football game but for a marching cadence it is much too busy in my opinion. I gave it to our lead drummer but he has yet to get back to me. Hope this helps.

First off, the snare part, is extremely easy. The snares usually get some crazy 16 or 32 note flam patterns because the marching snare drum is sharp and easy to hear.

The Tenor part, (yeah tenor), is fairly straight foward, nothing real difficult, but not real easy. Try throwing in some sweeps or scrapes or what ever you call them. Be sure to adjust the volume of the tenors when you play through your computer because the tenors are never going to be as loud as the snare.

The bass, get some more split parts and less unison.

Overall, it is busy. I come from a competive drumline and our cadences are always busy, but not like this. All of the notes overlap. You never hear a sweet snare part or a killer bass run or a crazy tenor sweep. I feel there needs to be less syncopation (spelling?) If your cadence starts off this fast you had better keep it up through the whole thing.

Our cadence last year started with a snare/tenor unison measure then the snares/basses layed down a simple beat and the tenors had some crazy 32nd runs. Then the tenors/basses had the background beat witht the snares flam-drag rythms overtop. Finally some crazy unison between everyone and into the individual solos. After the solos, the unison picked back up, but there always was kinda of a melody and kinda a harmony if you know what I mean?? :laugh:

Yea i agree with tenorman008, though it just seemed like a bunch of random notes. It had no type of pattern really or anything.....I also agree with you that it is Ok though you're drum major is right in the fact that it needs a lot of work! Good Luck!

It is cluttered, I agree. I'd rather not tell her yet though; I'll let her finish it up and have the line play it to see how it sounds. The MIDI can't really express what it would really sound like live.
