New Jazz Piece

Featured Replies

Hey guys heres my newest piece that I finished not too long ago

it's kind of got a slight Carla Bley influence in it, although I still tried to use some classical harmonies along with the Jazz harmonies.

Some of it is improvised, which is kind of a must for jazz in my book :D

The idea was to try to capture the ups and downs that love takes you through in life. As "Liebe" means love in German.

Any comments appreciated

Hey that was interesting!

First to say, your guitar sounds a bit to raw and ruff. I think you should deal more with the recording process and techniques.

I like the harmonies, they flow. They remind me of some songs of a bend from Serbia called Smak. And there is a nice part that hears like Piazolla.

I like your ideas. But I must say that you have to do more with dynamic of a song. A part, and repeated A part must be stronger then the rest if you know what I mean. Like in jazz, when a theme is played.

It is interesting, I like your harmonies, but would love to here some melodic minor or whole tone or bop notes! That would make it a bit more jazz.

All in all, it is brave and that's good!

Interesting. I like the harmonies - it flows in that guitarry-Pat-Metheny sort of way.

Melodically I think it could have been a bit stronger, but there was still a lot of great things in it.

I disagree with Igor's comments about dynamics and how Themes "must be stronger than the rest". While you certainly could have brought out the dynamical contour a lot more, it doesn't have to be the Themes that get that treatment.

The peak in energy in a piece comes (usually) at the 80% mark...yours, Will, doesn't seem to evolve or build as much as I would like to hear.

I also don't really agree with Igor wanting to hear more melodic-minor, whole-tone and bop-notes. Sometimes that kind of harmony isn't appropriate for a tune...and perhaps this is one of them. I think the music is solid and could just use a bit more refinement in the "presentational" methods. Give us more energy, more passion - exaggerate the hell out of it, because it's sometimes not coming across.

Thanks for the comments guys :D

Yeah, listening to it again I can hear what you guys mean about the dynamics, it is a little bland hehe..

Igor: As far as "Theme A" goes, it doesn't nessecarily have to be stronger than any other part of the piece. While I do agree about the dynamics, sometimes the "A" section is the smallest part. It's really more circumstantial

Robin: Thanks for the advice, I do agree about the dynamics, I guess since it was still a new composition I hadn't really let it sink in and thought about where I could take it. I will take your advice on that :)
