Oboe Concerto

Comment, i say! (I'm not in the mood for elaborating :o )

attachments removed, look for an update soon!

Needs a little polishing, but it's a very nice piece. The melodies on the oboe are great (apart from the bits that need polishing of course...). Sometimes your harmony is muddy, and I think you have some clashes in there. Try to spot them and remove them. The section with the choir reminds me of a composition by Stefan Inglis called Orange Dust. I listened to that around 2-3 years ago. The human brain is indeed an amazing thing :o

This is creative work. Be sure to post the finished version once you've cooked it up.

Well I think it is great. I liked all the orchestrations and melodies too. A quick question: Did you intend to use the opening passage of stairway to heaven as a melody in there because it is there?

You're right!

Stairway to heaven? Could you show me a mp3 of that?

This has the feel of game music in the way that you use the acocmpaniement to the oboe. It reminds me of the opening credits to say a fInal Fantasy or Chrono Trigger style game.

Oh wow, the bit of excitement you create at 1:15 is awesome! Do more of that! Don't give us a taste and then drop back into the quiet. That bit of relentless drive should last just a bit longer.

Not to suggest the quiet bit wasn't nie. I am curious as to your selection of orchestration. Choir and Piano in an Oboe Concerto? Not a bad thing mind you, it just struck me as a little unusual.

Still, this is a very enjoyable openning movement. Did you try to write this in Sonata-Allegro form? You've got good enough material to use that most noble of structures.

I am upset to hear the piece end so abruptly. Here is hoping that you can continue this work soon.

Don't worry, i've already got 5 minutes now and it's looking (sounding) great, i'll release a final 10 minute long polished first movement soon! :D

Just a one problem I found with your piece. Measure 44 you went out of the range of the obeo, or at least my obeo. Mine only goes to Bb below middle C...your piece made it go to D below middle C. It sounds nice midi wise, but it's not possible, or at least now on my obeo.

Stairway to Heaven...

I think he did use the stairway to heaven phrase also. I know he has before.

Sorry, but this does not feel at all like a concerto.

Firstly, why are there vocals in there? An oboe concerto should not have vocals. Secondly, you make abrupt changes out of nowhere and lead into material that seemingly had nothing to do with the previous section. Thirdly, you copied stairway to heaven, as many have pointed out. I am positive that you did this subconsciously, because almost everybody has heard the song. Fourthly, as far as I know, your score is wrong. Why do you include the solo instrument with the other winds? It should not be in the same section. Fifthly, I didn't check, but according to many you go out of range. Ensuring that you are within range should be a top priority.

It seems to me that if you renamed this from Oboe Concerto to something else, not sure what, it would be a better piece of music. People have certain expectations when they see the title "Concerto", and this piece met none of those for me.

Besides all of that, it has potential and some good ideas, and sorry if I came off as a bit harsh - it wasn't intended. Just being honest...

Actually, i inteded the vocals to be pure synth. I don't think any conductor would let me pull out a synthesizer in front of a whole orchestra though!

Here is a little thing that was originally going to be included but turned out to stray too far from the original.

If a conductor said "no synths", I'd politely ask him to retire if he's unable to cope with modern technology.

And you wouldn't get your piece performed...

And you wouldn't get your piece performed...
yea but i think most conductors would accept a synthesizer.

True. Most probably would.
