Prelude to Nothing (Short Piano Piece)

Featured Replies

Written (and recorded) Summer 2008 at The Walden School. Sprang from an assignment to write a short piano prelude, but turned out being not-quite-that. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. (Though, if you're going to come and tell me how I oughtn't to use parallel 5ths/octaves, don't bother  ) One specific question -- in a piece like this, should modulations be accompanied by a key signature change (as in score) or just be written out with accidentals in the original key signature?

Sib file and PDF attached, mp3 is HERE (sorry, this site doesn't let me do direct links to mp3 files. It's the one called "Prelude to Nothing.")

I wouldn't bother with the key signatures, especially when they're not tonally related. I think you should consider extending the upper range a little, revoicing some of the chords so that they're not just block triads, and maybe fleshing out some of the accompaniments so that they're more than a single bass note or octave. All this will make it sound much, much better.

By no means am I an expert critic, but I found that in the beginning, you seemed to be cycling between two bass motifs, perhaps adding some more variation in those would help to flesh it out.

Also, about two-thirds of the way in, you have large gaps between notes, which would be quite effective if you were using some larger or more dynamic chords, both higher and lower.

I may be crazy, so don't feel any obligation to follow my advice, but if you agree with any of my ideas, these would be the areas I'd work on.
