This is the second movement of a concerto I wrote for my friend Brett. He played a solo piece for me last fall, and thought it was too weird, so I'm on more of a traditional mindset for this one- let me know what you think.

nice texture of floating soundwave, and though midi usually makes music (for me) sound as if it was created for some mythical/mystical (and in a sense retarded) emotions (to express), i think here it fits fine and doesn't distract too much :D

i liked the use of percussion, especially where it would come out more.

it certainly reminded me of 'undecided' works, lutoslawski's (some music) comes to mind, but with a less edgy approach, guess it's called 'more tonal'.

so, again, nice work and if it sounds good even in midi, i think live sound would be really not a waste of time (for a listener - like me).

Hi c7. I don't think this is very traditional really; however I very much enjoyed it! It is incredibly dissonant but oddly quite peaceful and meditative. You have created some very ethereal and beautiful timbres, with very striking and interesting harmonies.

As a viola concerto I have a few concerns about it, but I am thinking from a traditionalists view point (and my idea of traditional might be somewhat out of date!). From your mp3 I couldn't really make out the solo viola part that well, and it seemed as if the viola had little importance, perhaps because the viola line did not stand out melodically. All the pieces of the orchestra seem to have equal impetus, which isn't really the norm for a viola concerto. Actually I can see your solo part in the score more clearly. If possible use a solo viola soundset for that, it got really confusing to listen to as I couldn't discern what was the solo viola part. Even with the score it does sound a little bit too abstract to be a viola concerto however, but I guess with a live violist out at the front of the orchestra it will be a different story.

Good job though, I really enjoyed it even if wasn't what I'm used to hearing!

The mythical/mystical emotional interpretation as mentioned above by pliorius struck me also. It would be a very interesting piece to hear live!

I agree about the sound quality on the solo part- the viola tends to get lost in the midst of the orchestra anyway, but the midi probably needs improvement.

Also, this is the second movement- the outside movements are more solo-oriented.

What really brought this style of music into the mainstream was the cinema. Most people hear this style of music and immediately think soundtrack just because that is what they are used to hearing.

To me this piece is very meditative in nature. But of course it would also work well in a movie.
