The Leonids

Featured Replies

Every November, the earth goes thru a part of space that the comet Tempel-Tuttle had once passed thru. Particles that were once part of that comet then enter the earth's atmosphere and we get to see what are incorrectly called, shooting stars.

These specific shooting stars are called the Leonids, because they seem to come from the same place in the sky as the constellation Leo.

Here it is

This piece uses GPO, JABB, The Garritan Authorized Steinway and EWQLSO and was rendered in Sonar 8 Pro.

Comments welcome

do you have a score of this? It sounds unbelievable! I love it!

This was composed in a sequencer and not a notation program, so the score is not pretty. I took out some of the instruments to make it a little smaller but it is still huge.

But here is a score. Bear in mind that it has no Dynamics and is missing a lot of other info that is normally included in scores.

Sorry that it sucks, but Sonar is not made for scores.

Thanks

This is a fine work - a gem - I really like it!

The rendering is superb creating a feeling of space with all the instruments clear and clean. I did think in some of your pieces there was a tendency to blur the melodic lines lines with percussion but not here.

The instruments are used in some very imaginative ways giving rise to some intriguing timbral combinations - it has your charactreristic style done to perfection. The piano part is very effective.

BRAVO!

Since I did this one I have learned a few tricks to get the sounds more like I want. But I will not go back and re-render this one at this point. Once I decide if it is finished or not is when I might revisit it.

Thanks as always.

I have no idea what that means

Ron, before I comment, I was just thinking that you should do a sort of orchestral suite based on your cosmic ideas. I think it would be cool to hear successive pieces based on your ideas (the galaxies colliding one comes to mind.)

That aside, I think you have and continue to improve which each new piece. You have a special gift in conveying what you are speaking with music. I say you are improving because you stay true to your unique voice, but this one seemed more coherent in terms of the piece as a whole.

The piano motivic material was a real treat. If you don't know by now, I'm a huge Stravinsky fan, and the trills in the winds and sustained strings were superb. My favorite parts were the glissandos in the brass. Very creative.

Excellent job Ron, it's sad more people don't take teh time to listen to your music with how well you write, but you can count on a comment on me :D

I always know I can count on you. Pity you don't compose more music than you do. It's summertime, get your donkey in gear and compose a piece!!!

I think you are asking for my insanity to run in a specific direction when you ask me to get some successive pieces going and yet I basically just asked you to do the same. A pair for the loony bin.

Thanks

Ron

Ron,

This was quite enjoyable. I really liked the sort of playful sound at the beginning with the woodwind trills and the pizzicatto strings and glizzandi in the brasses. It's all just really imaginative composing on your part. It really conveyed the sense of space and astrology. The piano in the middle was very nice for mood, and then bringing back the original theme to close the piece was also quite nice.

I can take a note from this for my own composition. So often, when I write a piece for (x) amount of instruments, I get trapped in thinking that each of those instruments needs to play most or all of the piece. I forget at time that each instrument offers it's own moods and effects that don't need to be used throughout. Again, like your piano which sits at rest most of the piece and comes in for a few bars in the middle, and yet it is perfectly crafted. I can't even imagine where the piano would fit in other parts of the piece without doubling some other instrument, which would enhance notes, but otherwise take away from the timbre and nuance of each individual instrument. I really enjoyed this. Good work.

I enjoyed that very much. I'm listening it again and again. I love this style :D

Wow, that was a very complexing piece. I liked how it actually sounded spacial, if that's a word. If what ThatGuy says is true, about having the gift of speaking with music, then I'll have to check out some more of your pieces.

I especially enjoyed the trills by the oboe and clarinets coming in half way through the melody.

Ron,

Nice meeting you finally! I enjoyed your piece very much. With all the dissonance in the beginning I thought that I wasn't going to like it very much, but your portrayal of space I could see before actually reading your description of the piece. It seemed a little short, in my opinion it could have gone on for another minute or so, but that's just me.

Great Job!

Mathieu
