May 20, 200916 yr I have a theory test and composition interview at Mannes next week. Has anyone been through this? I am wondering what to expect. thanks, Kass
May 21, 200916 yr Mannes- no. Message Justintokke, he's a member here. Again, I don't expect much of Mannes.
May 21, 200916 yr Well, I suspect it will have questions. If you want a good grade, I suggest you answer as many of them as you can. Hopefully this was helpful. :hmmm:
May 22, 200916 yr I have - the tests are thorough. Mannes is known for its theory faculty (basically the only person I ever heard who thought the tests were ridiculously easy was a pianist who graduated from the Moscow conservatory where theoretical training of musicians starts when you are in grade school). Ok as for tests, if undergrad - you will be ask to write 2 part counterpoint in at least 4th specie, harmonize a melody, do a short harmony analysis, and dictation and aural skills tests. Usually identify intervals and notate a relatively simple melody. Oh, you may be given a brief multiple choice question on music history. Note these tests are mostly for placement. Unless you show serious gaps, you should be OK. At worst you can beef up your skills thru Mannes Extension division, Juilliard Evening Division or even another school with a decent music department.
June 23, 200916 yr Author Thanks! I was accepted (now I have to figure out how to afford it...bleh) peace, Kass
