Sidewinder - pissed and sober versions

Featured Replies

Played solo in Lee Morgan's sidewinder one night in dungy jazz club absolutely hammered and was inspired to have a go at sampling the original recording and having a good improv sesh with it.

Guess which one I was playing after a few ;-)

Sidewinder.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage

Lewis4_mastered.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage - This was made by sampling a few of the riffs, some improv alto and bari, some live drums and the rest of the instruments are synths

Please leave any feedback you like :-)

Seems like this had good energy to it. Your tone could use a little work, but I'm sure your sober playing is much cleaner. Also, again I'm sure you know this, you over emphasized some notes that seemed weird being emphasized, like the concert F and Ab over the Eb chord. I mean, they're in the scale and theoretically work, but they were awkward the way you used them. It kind of sounded like you were doing the wrong blues scale at those points.

I love hearing other jazz players on this forum. I might post one of my own solos...

Like I said...drinky :-) Not sure whether top or bottom recording are referred to. If top then tone is more to do with mic position in the room - sounds horribly tinny and thin I know. If bottom then please give suggestions for what type of tone you'd expect? A lot of it is to do with mouthpiece and I prefer mouthpieces that allow you to give a piercing harsh tone as opposed to anything too warm and slushy. As for scales, not sure if you're referring to top or bottom recording.

You should post a recording! I posted another one just before If you'd like to comment on that too :-)

Yeah, the top one. I didn't realize the bottom one was you, I thought you meant sampling in the hip-hop sense. Wow, you have a great tone. 'Scuse me.

I posted a blues solo the I did with my school band, if you want to take a listen.

Um i'm not cool enough to know what sampling in the hip-hop sense is :-p Na I just chopped about 10 seconds of an mp3 I had and did a little bit of manipulation of it and worked around it with some improv and the like. I would like some different mouthpieces though to try out some different tones. but, if you play sax, i'm sure you'll feel the frustration of not being able to play loud enough to shatter people's eardrums, so that's why I like sharp and precise sound.

What do you play exactly?
