12 Tone Piano Piece

Featured Replies

This is just a short little piece I wrote for an assignment. Nothing much to say really, the row is a Schoenberg row from...something. Enjoy!

I'm not experienced enough to comment on the technical aspects, but from the way it sounds I'd say it lacks textural variety and enough variation in the rhythmic patterns. There are a couple of places where the bass part drops out (m14 and m25) and you use the pedal to create a good pause in the torrent of notes.

I know how tricky it is to write twelve-tone pieces so I'm impressed you've finished something this extended. Did you have a plan for the piece and what it might express?

There isn't a plan for continuation, mainly because this sort of thing isn't my cup of tea. I like the idea of 12-tone, but to me it's just more of an effect sort of thing I could incorporate instead of drawing out an entire piece from it. I agree it was lacking in variety, I'll keep your advice in mind if I decide to write another short piece of this nature. Thanks for listening man ;)

I think this is fine. And I don't think it lacks variety. It sounds very cohesive and the pseudo-ragtime feel is great. Granted, the left hand does serve often an accompaniment function but you do break it up by having the row in the left hand.

I played some of it and it fits very well under the hands. The pedal effect is a nice pianistic touch.

So overall for its purpose and brevity I think it is quite successful and engaging piece.

This just reminds me so much of what I might sit down and play. A lot of people think 12 tone means hit any note you feel like and don't realize that there is still a ton of structure and meaning that goes into a composition such as this.

I heard another guy that did a piece such as this and he had about 5 notes that just didn't fit (IMO). I know that doesn't make sense to some, How can a note not fit if all of the notes are allowed? But in this piece all of the notes fit in perfect progression.

I think I hear a touch of the beat from Puppet March in there.

Well done

Ron

Is this the row from Schoenberg's Suite for Piano op. 25?
