Lack of Faith

Featured Replies

This was one of 2 assignments that we had to write for piano, flute, and clarinet. I didn't know how to do this at teh time, but the key sig. is wrong, it's not D, there is no key. I now know how to get the atonal key sig.

We had 3 weeks to work on this, it had to be 3-5 minutes long. The title came not from religious sources or anything like that, but rather personal ones. I tried and tried to make a simple theme work but it just wouldn't happen. I finally had an idea with piano and kind of ran with it for teh final 5 days of work lol. So in a sense the title refers to the inner self, having faith in yourself to succeed, especially when a time limit is given...and...yeah das bout it.

Very well done!

This is a great example of how non-traditional music should be written. I have a few complaints, though. The first is that you explored some cool cross-textures in the first section of the piece, such as the parallel fourth lines. That was great! But, you didn't really go anywhere with them. On the other hand, you developed your rhythms very well and I could sense some real development with them. Going along with the lack of consistency is that during the B section, you introduce that minor chord + #6 which didn't really exist in the first section. However, in that B section, your counterpoint and that chord consistency really made it an enjoyable listen.

Near the end, I finally understood the extent of your development, and that was very good. I think you could have made it a bit less improvisatory, though.. that's a big complaint too. It seemed like you played until you found chords that you liked and then expounded upon then.

good work :)

used the classical era chord to become a atonal music is not a good idea to compose comtempory muisc because , people like me ( i like modern music) want to listen the sound colour change from the chord and voicing change from time to time however if you are have aims for this special reason for using the harmony like that , i will not reisit you any way

Mael: Thanks for the comment :) I agree I didn't explore as much as I should have, yet my deadline was pretty quick so I understand the flaws in it. It was kind of getting crunch time to where I had to figure out things pretty quickly, hence the flaws. Thanks again for teh review buddy, glad you liked it!

Dark: I have no idea what you just said.

I am so happy you are doing these types of assignments! Welcome to my world for the past two years.

Very nice contrasts between your A and B sections. Many good ideas in the A section which could be expanded into a much larger work. I don't find your transition back to the A material so convincing - seems there could be more lead into the large chords - either by building the texture to it or intermediate harmonies to those chords. Also I think the use of the low registers on the piano though a good idea sound a little blocky - I think it may be the midi or it is the static nature of the clarinet and flute accompaniment at times - but this is not a big deal.

I like the winsome piano ending - a nice understatement. And the B section is quite lovely.

Thanks for teh comment CO, I'm glad you liked it! I've always had problems with transitions, especially when it's crunch time, but thanks for the advice on that, I'll keep it in mind on future projects. Once again, thanks for the comment. It's always helpful to have feedback on extremely skilled composers as yourself.
