Untitled Egyptian Theme

Featured Replies

This is piece is part of a group of works "commissioned" (albeit without pay) from a group of Morrowind modders for a total conversion mod.

I wrote the piece in Linux MultiMedia Studio using Fluid Soundfont for MIDI.

Please comment.

I liked it all, except the abrupt ending.

Some things I especially thought you did well was the background strings throughout, and the the smooth transition between instuments in the same bar, without having to stop and start each time. It did sound egyptian, by the way.

As I stated, it ended when I wasn't expecting it to end, and so abruptly, I didn't like that.

Welcome to YC.

This is great work for a 15 year old. I wish I had programs like we have now when I was 15.

The more you comment on other's music, the more chances you will have for them to return the favor. That is what makes this site work.

Very nice work

Er... interesting ending!

Pretty good generally, but I would have like to have heard more brass in the piece to make a little more 'authentic' in style.

Apart from that, pretty good for someone your age.

It was good, but didn't sound authentically ancient Egyptian in my humble opinion; it sounded more like if a composer today were to write music for a movie set in ancient Egypt (which is good enough in my book).

Either way, you should look at an instrument called the duduk. It is an Armenian instrument, but sounds Egyptian/Middle Eastern in my opinion. You can see a clip of it here:

I think you could really incorporate a duduk in your future 'Egyptian' compositions. :D

I did like it. Very much. It sounded "dramatic Egyptian"-that is, not Egyptian in a cultural context but in a dramatized version. I, like the others, would have to recommend a, shall we say, more 'real' ending-or is the piece as yet unfinished?

Overall, though, you've taken what could have been a horribly cliche concept and turned it into something with interest and pizazz. Congratulations!

This seems to me more like the egyptian theme from some epic movie. I don't think an oboe can go that high.. O_O But either way this is pretty darn good! I can picture the sands rushing across the desert. I just don't like how it ends... so abruptly.. @_@

I agree that it lacks a certain authenticity, but you get that already. For me, I still think it's a really nice piece, definitely movie underscoring potential. It really depends if those who have "commissioned" it of you want something authentic or something that will be easy to listen to and give the impression of being Egyptian. I don't think you need more brass, I don't think there's really anything wrong with the ending, I think the only problem is that it's a midi playback and live musicians will make that ending less jarring. However, live musicians may not be able to play some of it, specifically sme of those pizzicato runs. I do have to admit, the pizzicato pedal tone also got a little boring for me after a while. It sounded like you were experimenting rather than writing. There were a lot of good themes and things running through the piece, but the only consistent thing it had going for it was that constant pizzicato thing. Still, for 15, very good.

Definitely meets the Egyptian feel.

I like this, sounds really good.

Sounds like something that would accompany a movie or video game from my perspective.

Messing around with the rhythms could provide some interesting effects, but I could certainly see myself playing an Egyptian orrowind mod to that!

Awesome usage of a harmonic minor scale! I enjoyed the beginning quite a bit. Your pizzicato string sections were perfect! Whoa.... haha I just got to the end. I know everyone has already said something about this, but the end is unbelievably abrupt. If I were you, I'd take five minutes and write an ending to this. You've got the skills to do so, considering what you've done with the rest of this piece.

try to create a climax , there is not climax inside your msuic

As I mentioned, this piece is for a video game, so the music has to be interesting but not take away from the atmosphere. Large climaxes are usually only used at specific points in video game music, so I have dramatic tension and release with the "oboe" solo (just to be funny, I made the notes way too high for an oboe ) in hopes that it wouldn't distract from the game too much.
