For a friend...

Well, I have to say that was not necessarily what I expected from a title of "Chocolate." I did enjoy it. However, I really felt like the voices coming in every so often to tell me about chocolate were a big distraction. I was more interested in hearing the rather melancholic (for a piece about chocolate, you don't like chocolate? :P) but beautiful music.

You got your piece of paper yet? If not, when?

This is a very mellow piece, but odd of course.

Read my newest post (House of Mirrors) when you get a chance and listen to the first half at least. I don't care if you comment, I just want you to know about the free VST I found, although you may already know about it. It has a great engine and because of it, I will probably buy their basic version of the software.

That was the first thing I thought when the music kicked in. God I love The Books.

Very well produced, I think the trumpet absolutely made the piece. The minor key and kind of serious air made it even more humorous.

Quite nice - reminded me a bit of Robert Ashley's work. And yeah, the trumpet is great. :)

I think the Spoken things should be quieter, actually, like they're coming in more as ghost-voicing rather than coming right to the foreground each time. Also tiny reverb would help make them seem over striking, if anybody else feels that. I can't tell if they're all panned different on these speakers, Laptop, But it would be cool to pan them all differently too.

As a more technical point: I'm not sure if that's intended, but for me the trumpet didn't melt together with the other instruments "at the same spot" very well. Particularly, the trumpet seemed much more distant than the other instruments (particularly piano/bass). It may be a reverb issue - or just the way the samples were recorded, in which case it may be hard to do something against it.

In any case, the instruments didn't totally appear as an ensemble to me, which slightly irritated me, but of course it might also be a desired effect, with the voice samples also being separated by their directness from the instruments. (Which Globutron already mentioned.)

Ron: Will have a listen once I find some time.

Gardener: It is a reverb issue. My room is untreated and I had to go changing reverb settings for the 3 instruments. But it was worth it. The mp3 is the non updated file. I loved the disjoined feeling one gets from this piece, so I kept it this way. Most people feel it's a live feeling rather than disjoined. ;)

I have to agree about the chocolate comments - thouhg the woman's voice fits but the opening male voice doesn't to my ears.

In fact it seems you have really two works here. I just don't hear it as integrated as I'd like.

Great ending of the instrumental and sounds of kids playing - the last chocolate felt unnecessary.

BTW I am being a little demanding Nik because this is a good piece - I just was hoping for something a little extraordinary from you.
