Cubase: Getting more out of VSTs

Featured Replies

Hey everyone.

Been a while since I posted, you know how things get busy! Anyway I'm starting a new project now, and really need to figure out how to get the best out of my sound library. I use EWQLSO Gold Pro+.

I'm also not much of a keyboard player at the moment, so I tend to compose the basics in Sibelius, then edit the MIDI data in Cubase 4. But there are a few technical details I'm having trouble with. For example, is it possible to set up automation in Cubase so that it controls the mod wheel on the EWQLSO VST? I read somewhere about linking a midi control channel to the mod wheel, but nothing in way of a tutorial!

I also need to learn how to switch between samples on the same channel. For example sometimes I'll want my 18 Violins section playing Legato, but then switch to staccato for a few bars before switching back. Again, I'm told its possible but I can't figure out how, and its frustrating having to put things like the occasional glissando on a completely different channel.

If anyone can help me out with a quick lesson in Cubase, or just point me in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated! If I'm not making much sense to you I'll try and explain the best I can - it's the problems that come with inexperience! Thanks, and have a good one.

I'm not very experienced with Cubase myself, but in my experience, the sampler itself usually has a master "instrument" which allows you to switch between articulations in "real-time" using a defined key (I know this to be true of at least Kontakt 3 and EWQLMOR

Thanks for that! It was more helpful then you think :) I played around in EWQL and Cubase and figured out how to use some of the keyswitches and effects in there. It's possible that what I specifically want is simply not possible. For example, I'd like to use the mod wheel to control the Vibrato. So I can begin a note with no vibrato, and then bring it in gradually as a real performer would.

Unfortunately I cant find an mod effect in EWQLSO that does this! Or not in Gold Pro at least, it's possible that sort of thing will be in the Platinum version.

Still, I did find some pretty useful effects, especially in the brass sections, though I'm not sure how much use the key switches will be, but I'll keep playing around to find something that works.

yea I use cubase also le 3.....they have great plugins and I use Cubase for mastering aswell.

keep up the good work guys

That's because it's a rompler version of Kontakt. You could do that in Kontakt with the same libraries and then adding a modulation source and routing the Mod wheel to that. You're pretty limited with the provided player, though.
