Some Short Pieces For a Little Chamber Group. :)

Hey, I think you might get more feedback if you posted a recording of your piece. I for one can't sight read a score without the music, and I'm sure there are others in my situation as well.

Well. An audio would be nice. At least to hear what you intend with the strange stem-crossings between alto and cello in ms 4. In these first measures there is a huge gap (of 2 octaves) between 2 low parts (alt & cello) and 2 high parts (ob and Violin). You need to fill those in for a beter sound.

Since I did not recognize a form of themes, i think I would not understand your piece. I need this before I can like it :) Not intended as mean critique, but I would like to know how your wrote this piece

Good points:

Good choice of instruments for a small ensemble (but why is the only violin part labelled 'Violin I'? One out of how many?).

Some attempt at contrast of instrumentation.

Use of simple rhythmic counterpoint throughout most of the piece.

Needs work:

There was a near-absence of dynamic, phrasing and interpretative markings in the score.

Your horn part should be transposed into F (notes written a fifth higher than sounding pitch)

The flute part is pretty low in its range and will not be prominent in the texture.

Rather simple rhythms most of the time.

This was also harmonically simple, and even monotonous due to the lack of modulation to other key areas. This can be deduced from the fact that nowhere in your score is there a single accidental, thus it is reasonable to assume that the music remains in F major for its entire length. Whilst this is not necessarily a compositional fault (Taverner, Part and Glass write with only a single tonal centre) it is not a successful method for common-practice music such as this in which the tonic-dominant conflict is fundamental to the piece. Study Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Mendelssohn to learn this.

The last five bars dwell on essentially the same chord and this was too long given the overall length of the piece. Two bars of F should be enough to reinforce a final return to the tonic.

As a previous poster mentioned, the melodic material was not memorable or coherent enough to form a strong structure. It sounded more like an improvisation than a structured melody. Again, the composers listed above will provide good examples to study.

Put your name on the score! You should be proud enough of your work to proclaim yourself the author!
