Pure Data

YO!

I'm going to dive into Pure Data and see what happens... [a continuation of this thread: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/computer-music-interaction-funny-noises-7888.html ]

Anyone else worked with it? ...

Stay tuned.

Hmm, didn't we have a PD thread somewhere around here?

Anyways! I don't have much experience with PD directly, but I've worked quite a lot with Max/MSP and it's pretty much the same thing. It's a great tool for live-electronics.

I thought so too...but try as I might, I found little YC reference to it...

I like it.

I'm barely 10 minutes in and already have a functioning sine-wave generator...I can control the pitch with my mouse and turn it off and on.

WHEEEEEE!!!

...

**edit**

After half-an-hour I can now do simple mathematics; produce multiple tones (turning each one one in turn with different volumes) and produce a simultaneous multi-tone "chord" .... OOOOHHH!!!

Nice... i found it intuitive like that too, much moreso than text-based stuff for some reason.

I use pure data so much, i have finished some sntetizers, if you want i can pass you a few tips and patchs

I'd definitely be interested in seeing what you've come up with.

I'm currently working through that tutorial, just trying to get a working grasp of the language/concepts...

The original plan was to use Pure Data as a real-time extention of my trombone. Either as effects for my sound, or as something that will react to or interact with my sound. I find the latency is a hindrance (it's just enough to be annoying when Pd is used for real-time effects, hardware based stomp-box style effects work much better), plus it's awkward to use, especially for me at this stage... SO, using Pd as an interactive/reactive aspect to my sound - used parallel to my horn (as opposed to the horn through Pd) ...

BUT, I can get some CRAZY sounds...

check out the fiddle~ object. combined with arrays and a prob~ function, you should be able to track and model what you're playing.

I've worked with PureData in the past and I'm working with Max/MSP these days, which is more or less the same thing, as Gardener also stated. In my opinion Max/MSP is a bit more user friendly than PureData, and it looks better.

PureData is good to start with, if you like it, I strongly recommend switching to Max/MSP.

Good luck!

sweet.. i have moved away from PD for the moment to experiment with other things.. but i definitely liked it and will quite likely be going back to it eventually
