Legion's Lullaby

Featured Replies

This is a quick piece I did with my newly acquired GPO 4.

It seemed to me to be like a lullaby, just not your typical child's song. Hence the name.

Here it is I have changed the title to Legion's Lullaby

Legion's Lullaby

I use Sonar 8 PE to compose and since it is a sequencer, it does not do the best scores. There are no dynamic markings or articulations in this and there are a number of very low notes that are not played, but are keyswitch notes to tell the program to change articulations.

Here is the score

Ron,

I may be "young," but I will say that your music holds my attention. Interesting chords used in this piece. And a interesting take on a lullaby. Keep it up! I know you will.

Alex

I've enjoyed this music very much! it sure has great chords and orchestration! Wonderful job! and if this ever gets performed anywhere near me, do let me know! i'm sure a real orchestra would make it shine!

This doesn't sound like any sort of Lullaby to me. Unless you want to think conceptually, as if the sound of soldiers marching to war is soothing enough to put Lucifer to sleep, but otherwise, I'm not so sure. As I just mentioned, it has a sort of warlike sound. Marching soldiers, or battle preparations, or planes preparing for take off. Something of that sort. The middle section is almost too contrary to the beginning and end sections. Somehow, they fit together, but a completely different mood, it's strange. In my standard RPG play, the middle section would be the briefing section...."here's what you've got to do, now brace yourselves, the enemy is tough, but I know we can beat them, NOW GET OUT THERE!!!".....and then the music returns to the snare drum and paced movements. Just my opinion. I like it very much, as always, your "quick little pieces" are fun to listen to and sound great.

Great job!

Only comment I have is that I didn't exactly get a feel of a lullaby, but more of a war-ish type of feel to it.

Great music as always ^.^

I am young at heart and young at composing. Thanks for not saying that it doesn't sound like a lullaby to you. You might be the only one.

Sherief

That's high praise that is greatly appreciated.

Not sure where you are from but if I am ever lucky enough to have it performed, I will find out and let you know.

OMWBWAY

The whole time I was composing this, I kept getting more and more tired.

Probably because I downloaded GPO 4 last night and then started this one and stayed up too late working on it.

So today when I got back to it, the piece just had that Lullaby feel to it. I even looked up the definition of Lullaby and when I realized it was mostly supposed to be a song for a child, I knew I had to come up with something a little different. Hence the name.

It starts in 4/4 but then goes to 3/4 and the 3/4 section just reminds me of a child's lullaby.

It's funny that you and OM say it made you think of a military piece. I can easily see where you are coming from, but until it was mentioned here, the thought never even crossed my mind. It should have while I was doing the snares, but alas it did not.

Thanks guys

Ron

I know what you mean. I sometimes get on streaks like that where I'm determined to finish 1 thing before I go to sleep, and one thing leads to another, and it's 7 am, and I hear my roommates waking upstairs, and the sun is up, etc etc.

You did a great job with orchestration, and good chord progressions to fit the whole idea that this piece is claimed by lucifer. However, there is nothing, except in the middle, that would lead me to believe this was a lullaby. The snare part, and the low brass swells and the tendency for it to dissolve into hits sounded a lot more like war, or some sort of chaotic, dark environment. ^.^

You did a good job putting the piece together though! Keep up the good work!

I have had the pleasure of listening to several of the pieces you have written. They are all very tremendous, I like them a lot as well from the point of melody, as from the point of composition technique.

One question I do have though... It seems to me that of all your compositions there is not one score on the site, something I do regret. Would it be possible to also have scores posted so one can read them through?

Kind regards

I could easily see this being used in a WWII movie or the such. (At least the beginning and end).

Has that very dark sound that I seem to always hear when an overview of a warzone comes into frame.

It was that middle section that kind of reminded me of a lullaby.

Beethoven Guy

Beethoven is my 2nd favorite composer of all time, so nice name.

I use Sonar 8 PE to compose and since it is a sequencer/DAW, it does not do very good scores.

Normally when I do a piece, I may have has many as 60 different tracks (staves). This piece however uses only 15 tracks so I was able to print up a score. The very low notes are keyswitches and are not played. They just change the articulation that the instrument uses, ie; Pizz, Up/down bowing, staccatto, etc.

When I use a small number of instruments, I will try to remember to post a score.

I agree with you that this does have that war overtone going thru it. I didn't do that on purpose. I just was trying out my new library.

Thank you ladies and gentleman.

This is by far a Lullaby, no question. It's very easy to picture it, even in teh A sections. Maybe not your traditional lullaby, but I can't imagine Lucifer being your traditional child.

Unfortunately, I didn't like this one as much as your other works. Sorry to be frank. :( Let me tell you why.

For one, you have great things going on in this, like teh 5/4 rhythmic motif type deal. I liked the singable B section melody as well. However, that great color I'm used to hearing from you wasn't there in this one. It has nothing to do with the fact that you obviously used less instruments in it, I just felt you could have done more harmonically. Granted there were moments, like with the brass and such that gave it a great flavor. I just feel like this was more of melodic theme, great transition, next section, melodic theme, transition again, end. I think if you highlighted harmony more in the A sections it would do nicely.

The B section was good too, I assume this is where you got the title from. It was definately a satanic twist to a traditional lullaby, I got a kick out of it! The only comment I could leave about this section is the pizz bass. If you simply omitted some of the notes it would enhance the ones there. The running downbeats just got a bit tiresome, a little variation to this (a quick 2 minute fix) would enhance it IMO.

I know you didn't spend as much time on this one, since you just got GPO 4 and were more or less checking it out, but that's just what I got from it. It's still a fine work, one that I've listened to repeatedly (like all of your other works :P ), I just think a little bit of further editing would let this piece really shine.

Another fine work, Ron. I'm continually surprized by your never-ending imagination.

I was going to wait a while to comment on this one, but it looks like you've gained a cult-like following recently lol. Remember, I was there from teh beginning!

I just finished over in ice castles, so I will now give you my excuses for the problems in this one.

I think the harmony is in the A section. What it is really missing is any movement in the harmony. I did do a little more the second time the A played, but it still needs more.

This was just done way too fast. At 3 minutes long I should have at least 15 hours into it and I barely have 5 in the posted version. I have been working on it a little more, but don't like anything I've done so far. I have been experimenting with the choir that came with GPO 4 and have tried to also incorporate that with no luck.

The pizz I haven't decided on yet. I started that section just with that and then filled in after and hate to see it torn up but I will do it if something comes to me. I had one guy say that the pizz going throughout that section is what made it for him. But I think it is overdone a bit myself.

I know that you have been with me a long time and I appreciate that greatly and I respect your opinions and have always tried to incorporate your ideas into my pieces. Except of course when you are dead wrong and have no clue what you are talking about. :whistling:

Sorry, that just came to me and made me laugh. I meant no offense.

Thanks

Ron

I think the pizz works- if you change it, be sure to "save as" so we can compare them! Nice work, Ron!

Ron

The title is an oxymoron since no one gets a good snooze down below and the piece matches the title with an intriguing blend of ideas. The snare drum adds a march like character but there are some quieter passages.

I was surprised and a bit disappointed when it started to repeat - I expected more - so I guess my main comment is that it didn't last long enough and it didn't seem that the ideas had been fully exhausted at the end.

For your first go using GPO 4 I would say it is a total success.
