Greek mythology competition

impresario

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! Since lots of people said they wanted to be in the old contest, but nothing was planned, I decided to start this one.

Rules:

The main theme must have something to do with greek mthology (character, story, place etc.)

It must be at least at least 50 bars long, and for any instruments you'd like.

Basically, do whatever you'd like, and have lots of fun with it!

The deadline will be September 1st, which gives you about a month, sound fair?

Submit any entries at any time to me by PM. Score and MP3/Midi/ whatever sound file is preferred.

Judging will have two parts -

1) The main mark out of 20 (I would do ten, but there might be to many ties) with a sentance of brief 'what to do better/what I liked'

2) A paragraph or more of feedback to explain the mark in more details. This will include notes that sounded off (with bar numbers) Parts that could be better, instrumentation problems, and whatever else might be worth mentioning in hopes of making you understand why you did how you did and how you could've done better.

Judges:

- Impresario

- Blackballoons

- Beethoven guy

No more judges are needed

Entries:

- Jimmyjuicin

- Royhoobler

- Shalom

I personally think these competitions should all, or mostly be based on the composition itself. Yes, a good piece in the professional world needs to be marketed as well as it is written, but for the sake of a competition here, it will always come down to who has the best/most toys. I think this makes it unbalanced. If the competition is judged on merit of the composition, then it is a level playing field. And here where the aim is to help composers grow musically it makes more sense to go this route. Even if someone has the knowledge of how to master their piece for presentation purposes, many of the 'Young Composers' on this site won't have the financial means necessary to obtain all the tools required for such a task. Just my 2 cents. I would like to enter, regardless, just cause it seems like a fun idea.

And thanks Jimmy for jumping in to help move this along with Impresario who's pretty new to the site. I've been watching this competition wondering if anything would come of it, or if it would be restarted, and I'm glad you 2 have taken the step to get it going again.

I will admit my judging might be more on hearing than reading the score as I'm a begginer (but I'm learning theory now through the lessons option on YC, so by the end of the month I'll be much better) but I'll try and make the reviews as helpful as possible.

Thankyou to JimmyJuicin for the first entry of the contest!

I think I'm done. This is the most detailed work composed so far.

Calliope in Greek means "Beautiful Voice". And she was the Muse for Epic Poetry. In this piece she is telling the story and the piano is the antagonist. They go through an argument, then a "battle" but live happily-ever-after at the end (the epic story theme).

There is a lot of flute solo... That is Calliope thinking about what is to be next?

Scores and MP3 to follow. This didn't take too long but I've probably worked on it two to five hours a day for 4 or 5 days. Whew.

I've posted an mp3 and pdf...

I will participate in this competition. :)

Writing a duo for flute and harp, my inspiration comes from Mnēmē, the muse of memory.

A small question, is it 50 bars no matter what time signature is used? Started out in 7/4 and will probably change it temporarily as I come to the B-part of the piece.

This was pretty good. Cool music. Only two post though? What is the story behind Odin's Prayer? I thought that was part of the competition.
