Finished 2nd movement of the piano concerto in d

Featured Replies

Hallo,

today I post the the finished 2nd movement of my piano concerto in d-minor scored for classical orchestra (piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, 1st and 2nd violins, violas, cellos and contrabasses). Its over 8 minutes, presented as mp3, I recommend to listen with headphones to hear all detail.

Feel free to comment, I hope you will enjoy it.

I liked it. That main motive sounds realy lovely, eventhuogh I think it's been used before a lot. But you colour it nicely with the orchestra and later on the piano. The exposition is near cliche (for me), but I think you showed your personal side in the development. I recapitulation comes in wondefully. That's real craftsmanship. The rest of the recapitulation is also spot on. You master this form and style quite a bit. Eventhough that main motive isn't very original, it's just a very lovely piece.

Thank you Gijs!

You motivated me a lot.

very well done. I don't think that it's a second mouvment. Much more like a first.

Thanks daveyflavey!

I think I now what you are pointing at. I used here the modified sonata form, which is not usual in the 2nd movement.

I omitted the double exposition (since it would be too long), so it goes as follows: motive A (D-Major)- motive B (A-Major) - development (different keys)- recapitulation of motives. And of course connecting all with modulation bridges.

Good work here, I like how you have elongated the original material. I just a few comments. Your ending is still kind of abrupt to me. Most of the piece is very flowing and focused on melody, but your ending cadence is just a bunch of chords - it shares no stylistic similarities with the rest of the piece. I think you should opt for a long smooth passage of notes as an end. Something that starts low and ends high or vice versa. There were a few spots in the middle where you keep things so similar at times that the interest wanes.

The rhythmic woodwind/string parts (I can't really tell lol) at around 4:30 work very well and sound excellent.

Where is the first movement of this piece? And yes, this does somewhat sound like a first movement.

Overall, good expansion but I feel you still have work to do. (Which is a good thing, shall only make is sound more polished and effective).

I like it, the piece has a dreamy mood (in my opinion).

I't is not so powerful and strong like a first movement.

So it could be a 2nd movement, even if there is a sonata form.

I think it's good to have people experimenting with old rules. :)

What I like most in the piece is, that you made the piece interesting

all the time. Some (especially classical) 2nd movements have the problem,

that they are getting boring after listening a while.

So, good work! :D

I was thinking about a longer coda to replace the simple closing cadence, but it looked as the concerto would be over, but there is a 3rd movement that comes. I will polish the movements when all three are completed and maybe add codas. (The very last tutti chord is cutted abruptly also, but thats just small mistake of the music file)

BTW the 1st movement can be found here: 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download piano_concerto_d_minor_prefinal.mp3

The score of 1st movement has also already been posted at this forum.

The score of 2nd will be uploaded.

The very fine polishment comes before posting the whole concerto, but that takes some time.

Thank you Wobbler!

I am glad keeping your attention and interest through the entire movement. For sure I would be banned by the classics although I appreciate the classical era music so much.

This is very beautiful. Near the beginning I though it was a bit cliched but you have developed it nicely. Especially the development after you transitioned to minor around 04:17.

It makes me imagine meadows and for some reason the reunion some long lost dog returning home.

Thanks KSP,

its interesting to read what you imagine by listening to it and also generally by listening to music. I am glad you liked it.
