April 18, 200620 yr Hello young composers I have just finshed this piece i spent a long time doing. And i am very happy I can share it with others,composers and musicans infact everyone I did not post this in major works for it is i think to short in lengh. -Type of orchestral style the piece is in i am unsure for i feel it sounds like a few different composers. mabe someone who knows more could explain. I have these words that set the mood before the prelude begins: These lands are full of war as they birth erosive greed. erosion and derodation upon the lands is bred harvested. and then injected among those of lesser worth. There mind controling ways never ceasing for they are half without it. It started that way and it can just as well end that way. -In the story of sarranothia the lands at war. Notes on the piece -Written for a Fantasy battle war type introduction to a story set in the past, on a different earth. It aim is to introduce the main characters and the land it is set in. -I hope to the listener the sound flows well and does not sound incoherent. My harmony in places i feel is not defining enough and proved difficult for me. I tried to get the best possible balance between all the different instruments. Which mixing for me is where i have alot of problems i hope the levels are balanced -I feel compared to my other orchestral piece (Humans through these eyes) to me my mixing is a little better balanced of the instruments. Though some places mabe need seeing to. -The overall volume may be low. -The samples used are not the best the bright trumpets used do not sound that good but it was the only sample i had that could cut through the rest of the orchestra. To me all the samples except mabe for the drums are not as grand as i wish them to be. All i can say is it will have to do. Info about the piece- Tempo changes Start - 0.23 at 114 Bpm 0.23 - 0.29 at 120 Bpm 0.29 - 1.02 at 146 Bpm 1.02 - 1.08 at 141 Bpm 1.08 - 1.43 at 150 Bpm 1.43 - 3.01 at 145 Bpm 3.01 - 3.18 at 165 Bpm 3.18 - End at 155 Bpm Instruments used STRING FAMILY - 1st & 2nd violins,violas,ceil,basses BRASS FAMILY - Trumpets,trombones,horns,tuba WOODWIND FAMILY - Piccolo,flutes,clarinets,basson,contra bassoon PERCUSSION FAMILY - Bass drum,snare drum,cymbles,xylophone,tamborine timpani,gong,orchestra bell Other - harp and piano I am not expecting anyone to take to this composition. April 19, 200620 yr sweet entrance! - good chord progressions in some parts - very exciting in the beginning - I love the fast stuff in the beginning - Perhaps a little too much dissonance at times (It could just be issues with my taste and not your writing) - melody flows ok although it didn't always click for me... I wish I could explian myself better - ooh just heard a part where I really liked the dissonance YEAH!!! It wasn't exactely my style but I thought it was very exciting! good job Keep composing!
April 19, 200620 yr Author Thanks for taking the time to listen and commenting Jonathon McKenna. I hoped to get the blood flowing at the start. In certain sections I have not worked with this kind of harmony before. So it was a new experience for me,defining the harmony was difficult. I am happy you liked the beginning.I think it is dissonance in place's so not everyone has that taste. The changes happen mabe unexpected at first. For the melody to flow with those changes proved of a hard nature. I am grateful even though it was not in your style. That you could see it in another light and took the time to listen and comment. Thanks for the encouraging words at the end.
April 19, 200620 yr I like it a lot. Reminds me a bit of some early Jethro Tull or King Crimson. The part from 0:45 to 1:15 is especially nice but I enjoyed the rest of it, too. I didn't hear a lot of 'dissonant' chords, I'd rather call it agressive. The opening chords could be a bit stronger though, in my opinion they sound too sweet for this kind of piece. You labeled it a prelude and I can imagine this as an introduction to some bigger piece. Standing alone I feel something would be missing. You build up a lot of tension that has to be released later. The sound may not be that great but it's good enough to provide a good idea of what it should sound like. Thanks for posting. Marcel
April 21, 200620 yr Author Thanks marcel for replying sorry for my delay reply, King crimson is one out of many amazing bands i like, and the stuff i have heard from them is great. To say it sounds like them i do not know they are great and well i am not in that league Mabe subconsciously i made the piece sound like that but i do not know for i did have other composers who i wanted to sound like. I do not know if those composers came through. Yeah then opening chords do sound major-ey, and you are right i do not belive there is much dissonants only in mabe a few places. Agressive yeah i do think so too but if an orchestra was to play i would like them to also be full of energy. You are right in saying that as it stands it would be missing something. As it is an intro where is the middle and the end of the story, only time will tell that story. Thanks again marcel you have of offered vaild points of intrest.
